    First House

This house refers to the following:

Body, constitution, complexion, strength, appearance, and stature.

Temperament, character, peace of mind, happiness and sorrow, inclination to work (If Saturn and Rahu are in the first house the native will be lazy. If Mars and Mercury are there the native on the other hand will be of active disposition), tendency to insult others, asceticism, sleep, dreams, knowledge, and attitude towards other's money.

Success, fame, reputation, and victory over enemies.

    Infancy of the native.

Head. If the cusp of the ascendant is in the first drekkan then also this house indicates the head, if in the second drekkan, throat, and if in the third drekkan, Basti, i. e. part of the body from genitals upwards half way to the navel.

Longevity, health, and freedom from disease. Good aspect (meaning thereby that the aspect will be by a planet that is a beneficial planet for the ascendant) to the cuspal degree of the ascendant indicates good health; adverse aspect to it causes ill health during the major or sub-periods of the aspecting planet.

    Living in a hostel.

    Loss of money.

. This house should generally be examined for all matters connected with the self. The owner of the first house in the sixth, eighth or the twelfth house with a malefic planet will impair health.

If this house is under adverse influence it means that the native had a difficult birth. In the alternative, in such a case, it can be the primary cause of ill-health throughout native's life.

If the first house, the house in which the Moon is placed and their owners are powerful, there can be no danger to the life of the native in his infancy. A powerful owner of the first house is indicative of long life.

If the Moon is in the first, fifth, seventh, eighth, ninth, or twelfth house and is afflicted, the native has short life.

The native is long lived and fortunate if the first house and the dispositor for its owner are aspected by beneficial planets. If this is not true even partially in a horoscope the native will not live long and will not prosper in life.

The association of the owners of the first and the second houses in the sixth, eighth, or the twelfth house can lead to impaired vision.

Good health is assured to the native if the owner of the first house is more powerful than the owner of the sixth.

Planet influencing the first and eighth houses and their owners determine the kind of death the native would have.

When the Moon in the birth chart is placed in the sign of a planet which is adverse for the ascendant, the native will not be at peace or happy with himself. The mental state will take after the nature of the adverse planet.

The native gets a bulky body when watery planets such as Jupiter, Moon, Venus or the owner of fourth, eighth, or the twelfth house influence the first house.

The stature of the native will be short, medium or tall according to the influence exerted on the ascendant, its owner and the nature of the sign in which the owner is located. If all the three ascendants (the first house, the house in which the Moon is located and the house occupied by the Sun) give the same finding it can be taken as confirmed.

If there is a long sign in the first house and the owner of that house is also in a long sign, the native will be tall. For finding out as to which signs are long or short, see the Chapter on Signs. The same logic can be applied to find out the sizes of limbs.

The constitution is determined by the owner of the first house in the navansha chart or the most powerful planet in the horoscope whereas the complexion is determined by the dispositor of the Moon in the birth chart or the navansha chart. Each planet represents some shade of complexion. The Sun represents red or dark brown, the Moon very fair, Mars ruddy, Mercury light with greenish hue, and Jupiter fair but pale. Venus represents swarthily clear complexion and Saturn dark.

The Sun represents bones in the body. If the Sun is the owner of the first house and is afflicted, it will cause trouble in the bones in its major or sub-periods. Similarly the Moon represents blood and can cause problems relating to blood including hypertension if it is the owner of the first house and is afflicted. Mars represents muscles and would cause troubles relating to muscles, Mercury represents skin, Jupiter represents fat in the body, Venus represents reproductive fluids and Saturn represents nerves. If any of these is the owner of the first house and is afflicted, it would cause disease relating to that component of the body that it represents.

If the owner of the first house is weak and afflicted, the part of the body which is represented by the sign in the first house will be afflicted. This will be particularly true if the sign in the first house is the mooltrikona sign of the planet. For example, if Aries is in the first house and Mars is weak and afflicted, then the native will have some trouble in his head.

If a planet situated in the first house is afflicted by malefic planets and does not have any redeeming beneficial influence, the body mass represented by the planet suffers. For example if this is so for Mars, muscles in the body would be diseased.

If the owner of the first house is debilitated and located in some house, the part of the body represented by the house in which the owner of the first house is located gets diseased. For example if the owner of the first house is Mars which is debilitated and it is located in the fourth house, the native would suffer from disease in the parts of body represented by the fourth house namely, chest, breasts, lungs etc. The nature of disease can be judged from the debilitated planet.

    The planet that influences

    the first house,

the houses in which the Sun and Moon are placed and

the owners of these houses, the most, should be determined. The planet that has the maximum influence on this planet should also be determined. These two planets together would decide the vocation that the native would adopt for his livelihood

If the three ascendants(the first house and the houses in which the Sun and the Moon are placed) and the tenth house alongwith their owners and the Sun are powerful and have beneficial influence only, the man becomes famous in the world.

The native cannot accumulate wealth if the owner of the first house is weaker than the owner of the twelfth house.

When the owner of the first house is in the ninth or the tenth house, and the Moon is in the first house, it is indicative of a rajyoga (a combination which is likely to yield a high position and wealth to the native). The same conclusion can be drawn by taking the karakamsa as the first house.

The owner of the first house in an angular house aspected by a friendly planet is indicative of a rajyoga. The same conclusion can be drawn by taking the karakamsa as the first house.

If the Moon aspects an exalted owner of the first house it is indicative of a rajyoga. The same conclusion can be drawn by taking the karakamsa as the first house.

If the owner of the first house is powerful, not combust and is alone in an angular house it is indicative of a rajyoga. The same conclusion can be drawn by taking the karakamsa as the first house.

A sambandha between owners of the three ascendants is a rajyoga. It confers plenty of wealth. The same conclusion can be drawn by taking the karakamsa as the first house.

If the three ascendants are aspected by their respective owners it is a rajyoga. The native will wield power. The same conclusion can be drawn by taking the karakamsa as the first house.

The native will be popular or shall come in contact with the masses if the owner of the first house is related to the fourth house.

If Jupiter and Venus, particularly if they are beneficial planets for the chart, are located in the first house the man would have a pure mind. If Rahu and Moon are so situated the man lacks in brains, or, the mind may be constantly disturbed and apprehensive.

The native will be of a balanced nature if the first and the fourth houses and the Moon are influenced by a strong Jupiter.

The first house represents the self. If it is weak and is under the influence of planets that represent violence, the person represented by the house where the second sign of the owner of first house falls may be harmed by the native. Let us take Gemini in the first house. If the first house is weak and has Ketu in it aspected by Mars, the native will behave violently with his mother, since the second sign of Mercury will fall in the fourth house that represents mother.

The rules for determining the nature of relationship that the native will have with a relative of his are as follows:

A malefic planet, or owner of the sixth, eighth or the twelfth house, placed in the house representing the relative or aspecting it, or,

the owner of the house of the relative placed in the sixth, eighth or the twelfth house from the ascendant, or,

the owner of the house of the relative is placed in the sixth, eighth or twelfth house as counted from the owner of the first house, or,

the owner of the first house in an inimical sign in the house of the relative, or,

the owner of the first house being inimical to owner of the house of relative, or,

an afflicted or badly placed karaka for the relative, will indicate that the native will NOT HAVE GOOD RELATIONS with the concerned relative of his. The more the number of above conditions are satisfied with regard to a particular relative of the native, the worse and more bitter will the relations be between the native and the relative in question. On the contrary if these conditions do not exist and the two owners are placed in a mutually satisfactory position, the native will have cordial relations with the relative in question. It can easily be judged as to how cordial the relationship would be, depending upon the kind of placement that is present in the chart. The following are two rules of the thumb: (a) According to Hindu mythology, Saturn is the son of the Sun. The Sun is representative of father in the horoscope, (i) If these planets are placed in adverse houses from each other (in the sixth, eighth or the twelfth), the native will not have good relations with his father, (ii) If Saturn is an adverse planet for an ascendant, and it aspects the Sun or is in sambandha with it in that horoscope, the relationship between the native and his father will not be cordial. (b) According to Hindu mythology, Mercury is the son of the Moon. The Moon represents mother in the horoscope, (i) If these planets are placed in adverse houses from each other (in the sixth, eighth or the twelfth), the native will not have good relations with his mother. (ii) If Mercury is an adverse planet for an ascendant, and it aspects the Moon or is in sambandha
