Understanding the Nakshatras - Saket Shah
Bharani – The Elephant
Bharani (13.20-26.40 Aries) is denoted by a triad of faint stars, also known as the ‘Bearing Star’ or ‘Star of Restraint’. Bharani is said to behold the energy of Venus and according to Vedic astrologers, Bharani represented the female sexual organ.
The indications of the name Bharani primarily relates to the feminine aspect of nature and its potential to receive, bear, foster and annihilate. Often understood as the doorway to another world, Bharani stands for catharsis, forbearance, jealousy and sacrifice.
Behavioral Characteristics
The functional representation of Bharani can be bets summed up by its nature to tend towards extremities. In fact, this is a constellation that oscillates between polar contradictions like the bohemian and the puritan, wisdom and naiveté, maturity and immaturity, and finally life and death. Bharani stands for desire, which can be summarized as a lust for life and fear of death. It is looked upon as a 16 year old girl on the verge of deflowering, a baby borne in the womb or someone facing the Yamadutas or celestial angels who guide human beings to afterlife.
The childlike aspect of this nakshatra makes Bharani one of the most willing constellations. They are marked by the desire to explore their surroundings to the fullest, and often have a primeval innocence in their experience of people and places. Often instinctive than reasonable, Bharani is engulfed by overwhelming emotions and desires that can rarely be contained, making the evolutionary nature of the soul prominent.
Those who exhibit the more evolved nature of Bharani steer their energy into fruitful pursuits, whereas the lesser evolved persons hop from one source of light to the other. In today’s world of chaos and confusion, it may be very difficult to restrain a Bharani. It is parallel to the mental and physical contradictions teenagers experience after puberty. If not guided, these natives are likely to plunge into everything that comes their way.
Bharani people are accustomed to deal with life’s upheavals and hence they are strong characters. They might be crushed and crumpled at times, crying after a loss, but nothing can contain them for long. Due to their desire for extremes, these people seem to go through radical transformations throughout their life. Once they have embarked on a new path, they explore all its possibilities to the point of exhaustion when they have no choice but to look for something new. The Bharani universe is boundless.
The creative impulse of Bharani is represented in childbearing in females and manifestation of creative energy in males. The interplay of the masculine and the feminine makes Bharani a very sexual nakshatra. Driven by the force that draws opposites, Bharani experience, engage in, fall prey to and try to recognize it in every way possible. Sigmund Freud had a prominent Bharani in his native chart and thus he analyzed every activity on the sexual plane. Evolved Bharani natives, however, are more concerned with love, harmony and unity.
Natives of Bharani are characterized by expressive eyes, a large head, medium sized lips and a death-like smile, which denotes their sexual urge, inscrutability and the process of life and death. They have a calm disposition despite a tormenting mind. Energetic Bharani natives can encounter success when under wiser guidance.
Quarters or Padas

Libra Navamsa (20.00-23.20 Aries): This quarter is ruled by Venus. It is characterized by synchronization, limitlessness (in love and sexuality), and fulfillment of desires
Scorpio Navamsa (23.20-26.40 Aries): This quarter is ruled by Mars. It is characterized by extreme energy, lack of inhibition
Gana: Bharani is a human/manusha nakshatra and summarizes the significance of birth/death like spouse, resources and family.

Measures for Remedy
Bharani natives meditate on death and hence may worship Yama, the death god, or Kali, the dark goddess. Worship of fertility goddesses is also auspicious. Chanting the root mantra Om Eem
108 times during the lunar transition of this nakshatra alleviates afflictions. Wearing red, white, black and dark colors is also recommended. All important actions should correspond to the course of this constellation for best results.
Miscellaneous
In the words of Varahamihira , the lunar influence gives Bharani resourcefulness, honesty, health and happiness. Bob Dylan is a typical Bharani native.
Krittika – The Razor
Krittika (26.40 Aries-10.00 Taurus) is the root source of solar energy, represented by a group of 7 stars, the Pleiades. This constellation was seen by Vedic astrologers to represent a necklace and hence its galactic importance was significant. Ruled by the god of fire, Agni, Krittika is the storehouse of the passive agent that nurtures power.
Krittika denotes the ‘Cutters’, which has more to do with femininity than male power. Just like a cutting instrument, Krittika symbolizes construction as well as destruction of mental and emotional impulses.
Behavioral Characteristics
Krittika is said to be the Sanskrit root for the word ‘critical’. Hence, the basic nature and function of this constellation can be easily surmised. The critical and fault finding aspect of Krittika can be accounted for as
