Wednesdays were the worst day of the week. Any memory of weekend fun had faded and it was several days until the next weekend. Working as a law clerk meant that I had all the drudgery associated with being a lawyer but none of the excitement. Thankfully I was good at my job and it paid well. I could wear all the latest fashions, eat at the finest restaurants.

Wednesday.

I shook my head, took a deep breath, and pulled out another stack of due-diligence documents. If there was a problem and I missed it, I would be blamed. If I found a problem, our client would be upset. A lose-lose proposition.

Thankfully Wednesday was followed by Thursday and Thursday night’s wine tasting, which was followed by Friday. And Friday ended with Friday night and my second date with Charles Lambert. Charles didn’t like being called Charlie but didn’t mind ‘Chuck’. He had no problem calling me ‘Luanne’ and never even tried to go for ‘Lou’ or ‘Annie’.

I knew what Chuck saw in me because he was effusive in his praise of my physical attributes: short, sexy, and voluptuous. Short was accurate—I was only five-foot three. At a hundred and twenty-five pounds with an hourglass figure—large breasts, thin waist, wide hips—I guess I qualified as voluptuous.
