About this ebook

For his day job, Charles works at a highly advanced government compound (the Extraterrestrial Mineralogy and Geochemistry Lab) analyzing the composition of meteorites. At home, he's a husband struggling with performance issues in bed, the appearance of unwanted flab on his body, and periodic episodes of zoning out. He thinks it's a product of age. But also he swears he's feeling an energy coming off a certain meteorite in the lab, which also happens to have a hypnotic pink glow—although no one else can see it.

As the weeks pass and more samples are taken, Charles is beginning to fill out in places that no man ever should and suffer from erotic thoughts about his muscular coworker. New, lustful urges are taking over. Something is fighting to come out of him, and it's very hungry for hunky men...

Acquiring sample one-two-seven, Bobby announced, his rad-shielded outfit crinkling like aluminum foil as he chipped away at the meteorite, hammering off a small chunk which he then sealed into a little bag and carried over to the analyzer. He was just a scrawny grad student; inside the protective clothing, he waddled more than the rest of us.

The analyzer hummed and clicked like Hollywood’s idea of fancy computers back in the sixties and seventies. Behind the safety glass, Hayden and I received the output.

Pyroxenes containing iron and magnesium. Kamacite. Quartz.

The computer saved everything into a database, but still we were required to jot all the information down by hand.

    Redundancies: the government’s favorite hobby.

Bobby waddled back to the meteorite for the next sample.

You get your gym membership yet, Charles? Hayden asked. He had brought one of those compact dumbbells with him and was doing arm curls to pass the time. "It’s around that time—mm—you have to start thinking about your—mm—physical condition a little more seriously."

    Nah, I haven’t, I said.

There’s pretty ladies at the gym.

"I happen to be married, thank you. Happily married."

Still. There’s pretty ladies. Tight leggings.

Hayden and I worked at the Extraterrestrial Mineralogy and Geochemistry Lab, or EMGL. It was a government site, ten miles outside of town. And from the exterior, it had all the appearances of being a spooky, top-secret research site. There was a security checkpoint, some armed guards, and blast shielding throughout the whole facility. But excessive security was another way the federal government liked to waste their money, and the impression of the outside was nothing like the inside. And while we were extraterrestrial scientists, technically speaking, nowhere in the building were there frozen alien corpses or parts recovered from a spaceship like the tabloids would have the average person believe. In fact, the government was looking to remove the word extraterrestrial from the lab’s name because the general public was full of so many idiots.

Basically, we examined rocks. Meteorites were shipped in from all over the world, and us few rock-touchers were tasked with seeing what they were composed of. Probably the politicians and bureaucrats fantasized we might discover some new element and new technology, but everything we found was pretty normal.

This was our routine most nights: Bobby taking samples, Hayden and I working behind the glass. And by working we were really just making sure the kid didn’t wield his little chisel in a way that posed a risk.

    Acquiring sample one-two-eight.

I caught myself rubbing my chest again. Lately, I’d noticed it was beginning to get flabby, with my nipples in particular being sore most nights. On the scale, I wasn’t gaining any weight—actually, I’d shed a few pounds since the beginning of the month. But I was starting to think my coworker was right. The mid-thirties were when things started to deteriorate. And while I’d always looked fairly good for not working out, maybe it was time to focus on my fitness.

All we did was stand around and eat vending machine food.

    Now Hayden was
