About this ebook

This book is a combination of two books. Only a Start was first published in 1978. It was probably the worst attempt at self-publishing ever seen by mankind. It is a compilation of poems Rebecka Vigus wrote as a teen until she was 23. It includes her poem, This Our State, which was introduced to the state Senate as a possible state poem for Michigan. These are her first writings and some are amateurish.

Beyond contains poems from Miss Vigus' later years. They deal with death and loss, her daughter's teen years and life in general. It also includes some song lyrics she has written. In this update she added some poems under the heading of memories. There are some poems here to capture your heart, but they also tell a story. It's up to you to find them.

    Introduction

I came of age in the 1970s. Those were my teenage years. It was also the time of the Viet Nam War, peace protests, campus sit-ins, campus shootings, the sexual revolution, free love and rock and roll. Flower children were everywhere, airports, bus stops, college campuses.

The early poems in this book all came from my first book; Only a Start, originally published in 1978. They reflect those times and are the beginnings of my writing. Some are amateurish, others had some real thought put into them. They were then and are now a reflection of my feelings at the time. They tell their own story.

My poems still reflect my feelings. Some mark major events in my life, some were thoughts that just came to me. Many of them have been included in other anthologies. Some have never seen publication before.
