Adenrele's Pot of Gold and Other Stories - Mariam Campbell

    Adenrele’s Pot of Gold

Adenrele loved food . He did not only love to eat the food, he also loved to make them. Most of his friends would make fun of him because instead of watching football like all the other boys, Adenrele would watch the food channel and other food shows. On many occasions he would be found in his mother’s kitchen experimenting with recipes. Last year alone, he was banned on four different occasions from entering the kitchen.

Adenrele I don’t understand you at all that was coming from his father Mr. Vincent Ibidapo

You people should leave my son alone o! says his mother Mrs. Bolaji Adebayo-Ibidapo

Mr. and Mrs. Ibidapo are both lecturers at the Lagos State University in Ojo, Lagos State, Nigeria. Mr. Ibidapo met his wife while he was still a junior lecturer and she was studying for her master’s degree. They fell in love and got married. Now they have four children; two boys and a set of girl twins.

Adenrele their first child and son is twelve years and is in the secondary school. His younger ones are Sesan 10 years, Seun and Seyi, the twins who are 8 years.

Adenrele was always with his mother in the kitchen and he loved to help her anytime she is cooking or in the kitchen. This is how his love for cooking started.

Despite his daddy’s comments, everyone liked when Adenrele cooked. He was always experimenting the food he watches on the television.

The television is on and an advert comes on.

Are you between the age of 12 and 16 years? Do you think you can cook better than your mother? Do you have what it takes to be the next great chef? Parents do you have a master chef in the making in your home? Send them to our cooking competition for children. Let’s see how good your child is. The advert continues and Mr. Ibidapo notes the number to call and how to register for the cooking competition.

Okay now master-chef in the making Adenrele. Do you think you can cook? Asks his dad.

Yes daddy. I am sure I can cook. You say so yourself Adenrele responds

In that case you must be a part of this competition. I will register you if you make that combination peanut/chocolate/strawberry cookies you made last week. Make plenty that I can take to the office tomorrow. Says Mr. Ibidapo

See this man. How can you be blackmailing your son? Don’t mind your dad my son. Make the honey marinated grilled fish you made for my birthday says Mrs. Ibidapo

But mummy today is not your birthday says Sesan

    Everybody laughs

Sesan what do you want me to make for you? Adenrele asks his brother

I want the cookies and ice cream Says Sesan

Okay why don’t I make a little of everything? At least I will have to submit sample of my work when I am registering for the competition says Adenrele

That is true o says his dad

    6 months later

At the studio of the Kiddies Cook competition. Eight teenagers including Adenrele are seen cooking their masterpiece meal for the judges to try.

Adenrele makes his daddy’s favourite cookies, his mummy’s honey marinated grilled fish and his special blend of ice cream.

Thirty minutes later everyone is done and the judges are going round to taste the food that all the contestants have made.

Adenrele’s food is finished first. The judges really like his food and he is declared the winner.

One of the judges owns an ice cream company and he really loves Adenrele’s ice cream blend. After the whole event settles down he calls Adenrele’s mummy.

Hello good afternoon says Mrs. Ibidapo as she answers her phone

Good afternoon. I’d like to speak with Adenrele’s mom, Mrs. Ibidapo Says the voice on the phone

This is she replies Mrs. Ibidapo

My name is Frank Seles of Frankies Creamery says
