Meryle and Lancelot's Adventures - Genevieve Leanne Dominguez

    Chapter 1

Merlin, How are you ? It’s been two months since your last letter. Is everything okay?

Merlin, Have you gotten any update about the Excalibur stone? Has Anders hidden it yet?

Merlin, Mikah told me you lied to make him your ally. Is it true?

    Merlin,

I hope you’re doing good and everything is well at Camelot. Winter has officially arrived! I cast the spell to keep the village warm. Do you remember when we first tried it? Everyone couldn’t stop sweating and we had to fill every bucket we could find with snow. It still makes me laugh when I remember how the snow melted as soon as it reached the village.

I’ve almost perfected Aunt Riley’s blackberry pie recipe. I know you’re smiling and shaking your head as you read this, but it’s true! I’m learning to cook without magic. Have you found a good teleportation spell? I want to send you a pie.

How’s Lance? I can’t believe Arthur let him keep Sizzle. Although now that I think about it, you’ve always liked dragons...

Please tell Arthur I’m grateful he’s willing to extend an invitation for me to visit again, but...would you consider visiting us sometime soon? Arthur can come, of course!

As always, I wish you were here.

Love from the bestest cousin in the world,

    Meryle

I fold the parchment twice and carefully tuck it in a sturdy cream envelope. Then I cast the spell that ensures only Merlin can open it. Tomorrow, I’ll head to the market and pay one of the traveling merchants to take it to Camelot.

Or should I say Merlin’s doom.

The worry I’ve finally managed to put to sleep jerks awake and begins slithering around in the back of my mind. I still don’t have the courage to ask Merlin if what Mikah said is true. If it is, it’ll lead to the worst question: Have you lied about anything else?

I place the envelope next to my market basket and head outside. As I enter the forest that borders the western edge of my village, my thoughts drift upward, lazily entwining themselves in the gray birch tree branches. When I find the tree that Merlin and I carved our names into, I sit down. The sky is tinted in several shades of orange and the sun is a butterscotch orb, slowly sinking below a puffy cloud that meets
