PROLOGUE
My name is Emmber. My father calls me his Gold Star. The story of how I got my name will seem impossible, but everyone gets their name from somewhere. So, let me tell you how I, Emmber ‘Gold Star’ got my name from mystical creatures and why they gave me my name.
With how red my hair is some would say that it was consumed by fire during birth as the Sun god Jano, was watching so intensely to see which god I would look more like. It seemed that all of the gods and all of the mystical creatures had a bet to see who I looked more like. From what I am told none of them were satisfied with the answer... or were they?
Rumpelstiltskin was so fascinated with my ever-changing eyes that he fell in love with me. So as a token of his love he gave me gold, but not in the form that most everyone is familiar with. Everyone knew that gold is heavy, so he turned it into strands in my hair so I would never be burdened with the weight of heavy bricks of gold. It would shine in the light of the sun and be vividly noticeable.
He wrote me a letter addressing my older self. The letter began by saying,
If you’re ever in need of gold, you should pluck one of your golden strands and think of how much gold you wish to have and another gold strand will replace the one you plucked. This will only work for you, so never fear; not one soul will be able to steal one of your golden strands for it will turn into an iron color as though it was plucked from an old hag.
It also came with a warning saying,
If you were to pull all of the gold strands and become greedy, the gold strands would disappear and you would never be able to touch gold again. There may also be more severe punishments too that I may not be able to tell you about yet.
I have always heeded the warnings I was given. It didn’t matter who warned me, I always listened. Let’s hope that one day I won’t need to be in a situation where warnings are life or death.
Chapter 1
Iwore a long-sleeve , silk, iridescent, ocean blue and green dress for my birthday ball. It is one of the favorite dresses I was given by my benefactor; it complements the tones of my skin and emphasizes the ever-changing color of my eyes.
It was tradition to wear anything that was given to you by the gods throughout political and diplomatic journeys to show our gratitude toward them. It was also a tradition on your birthday to wear anything that was given to you by the gods.
My dress happened to be a gift from a man that is called Rumpelstiltskin. Although he was not a god, he was not causing his normal mischief in our kingdom, so I decided it would be fitting to show my gratitude for his generous gift by wearing the dress.
I never knew Rumpelstiltskin; I have however heard many tales of his awful doings and many of how extremely smart he is. Some say that he was the smartest person in the world before he disappeared. Some of the stories I have heard of the one and only Rumpelstiltskin was that he liked to take children from women who made deals with him. I’ve also heard he left broken hearts in his wake. I know these are just fairy tales and folklore but I had a feeling that maybe they weren’t entirely true.
Emmber!
I heard a female’s voice call out and echo throughout the halls, close to my bedchamber where the maidservants were helping me with the final touches of my hair. You’re running late, again.
I could hear her muttering that I was a silly girl for being late to my own party.
I decided to no longer be a hassle to them and called out to them revealing where I was. Moments later my very old-looking tutor Maggie walked gruffly into my bedchamber. She was also a gift from Rumpelstiltskin.
He gave her to me at my birth, so from the beginning, she taught me everything I know. She taught me to speak and write every known language and [whatever else I needed to learn]. From what everyone says to my parents I suppose they think I am the smartest person alive; other than my ancient tutor.
Salut comment ca va?
I looked at her reflection in the mirror and innocently greeted my tutor in one of the many languages
