My head sank and sweat rolled down my face. I was in a crowd full of killers and supposed saints who thought that they were always right, but in reality, they were wrong. I was amongst them all, scared to death thinking that they would notice me, but they did not, for I was shielded away from them. I was not to use any of my abilities in front of humans; especially the Christians and I had not the slightest thought of doing so. I looked all around me; they kept away from me as if I was a new stranger, in a small village that has only traveled here to see the killings of so many witches.

I glanced up to the woods where the others waited, my true friends who would help me in my attempts to save the girl that I had captured and the girl that I loved. My eyes fluttered back to her, she was so scared and her thoughts were begging me to come for her, to rescue her, but I was already there waiting for the right moment to save my true kind. My mind began to race frantically as the drums of death echoed through the warm air. My heart pounded against my chest, and I could tell my friends were becoming impatient with me. I searched the dense gathering of people for my father, he was high up above the crowd, in a small booth, that over looked the witches that were about to be hung.

Tommy trotted back and forth happily, smiling at all the witches as each one of them glared angrily at him. He held up his hand to quiet everyone down so he could speak. The silence came and everyone whispered in wonder to what he was going to say. He looked in my direction and he sent a smile my way. I flinched when I realized that he wanted to kill her first.

    Chapter 1

    Stranger

On the last few days of January, everything was normal and peaceful just as it always had been, but that very particular day was not something that I had expected.

I was reading a romance novel and admiring the sunset, as tiny flakes of snow fell from the cloudy gray sky. I smiled at the marvelous beauty of winter and the thought of how wonderful it was at how people came up with such great stories.

I sighed to myself and let out a deep breath. I was tired of the coldness, but the winter season is a magnificent part of nature.

I wrapped my warm shawl around myself as tight as I could and as I did, I had noticed something coming from the distance. I stood up to get a better look and gazed into the thick mist that spread throughout the cold forest.

To my surprise, it was only a hooded man that rode upon his black stallion, but something about him frightened me so. My stomach turned, and my breathing became heavy as the man came closer and closer to my home.

I quickly hurried indoors scared to death, only because I had not known who was coming to my parents home that late in the evening.

A Christian? I whispered to myself as I gazed out the front window.

What is it my darling sister? My eldest brother Vincent had asked.

My brother was alarmingly beautiful… well to other women, but he certainly put many men in the Coven to shame. His soft blonde hair drifted past his muscular shoulders, he stood out most with his brilliantly shaped face and lovely almond brown eyes.

I pointed toward the stranger. Who is that man among the black stallion, is it a Christian? I turned to look at my brother for an answer.

Vincent gazed into the mist. No my sister, look closely at the horses left hindquarter, he is branded by the pentacle star. Vincent revised.

So a witch has come here? I shifted my curious eyes again to my charming brother.

Yes, if I’m correct he is probably here for father. Vincent assured me.

Now Selina, when this man arrives tend to him while I go seek father.

I nodded and watched as the man stepped onto the porch. I cracked open the door far enough only to see his face.

May I come in? The stranger’s voice was sweet and alluring.

I looked him over not knowing if I should or not. Something about him did not feel right and his aura was different from other good witches.

Other then that, the man was astonishing, but not my type. His deep brown hair feathered down to his pointed chin, and his light green eyes twinkled in the faint candlelight.

Yes, are you here for Beherit? I asked.

Why yes. The stranger beamed cheerfully.

Very well, he’ll be right in. I invited the guest in and thought nothing of his strangeness.

Would you like anything Sir? I asked, treating him as I would any other guest.

Yes, some wine would be nice, thank you. The stranger sat and removed his cloak.

Oh and Madame, you can call me Derick, Derick Ulin. He prompted, taking hold of my hand and kissing it gently.

My father and our Master of all our kind entered the living room as I left.

Derick, it’s a pleasure to be seeing you. Beherit gleamed, holding out his arms. Did you run into any troubles on your way here?

No Beherit, none at all. Derick said.

    Good.

I then returned with Derick’s wine hoping I had not disturbed them, but they seemed quite happy as I returned.

Lord Drake, it’s a pleasure to have finally met you. Derick bowed before the Dark Prince and kissed his hand.

Drake did not look pleased, but he accepted the strangers politeness.

May I ask where you are staying? Derick took the goblet of wine from my hand and winked at me.

I’m sorry, but I can not speak of it. Drake stared at me as he spoke.

Would you like anything father? I asked.

Beherit held up his hand. No my daughter, thank you. However, could you excuse us for a moment? We must talk.

With that said, I knew my father would be talking of me. I nodded and walked away, but kept close by so I could hear some of what they were to talk of.

My daughter’s quite gorgeous, don’t you think? Beherit had asked Derick.

Yes, she’s more than words can describe.

I did not catch anymore of the conversation, because my mother pulled me into the kitchen to help with dinner and she had noticed my lingering. I was so nervous and scared, I had not a clue what the whole conversation was concerning. The only person I could speak to about it was Lord Drake…

Night had finally taken its place, and Drake had left about an hour ago to tend to some things. I wish he could have taken me with him, because I had a very bad feeling about tonight, and I was lost in thought about why Derick Ulin had come there.

A pleasant aroma filled our kitchen and candles lit every part of it. I watched Derick closely as he took in the beauty of our home.

What was he thinking? I thought plainly to myself.

My mother’s lovely voice interrupted my thoughts. Everyone, come sit. Supper is ready.

The family and Derick rushed to the table at the sound of her glorious voice.

Beherit glanced at Penelope in a very beautiful way, a way that only true lovers look at one another to show how much they care for their mate.

It is told that my father had found my mother in a meadow so long ago.

Penelope glowed with extreme beauty, luscious, black, silky hair fell down to her waist, and her lovely face held piercing blue eyes that made up all of her enchanting beauty. That beauty of my mother was the thing that had caught my father by surprise the day of their meeting.

I smiled faintly at the two’s happiness together and hoped that I could be that happy one day.

You look wonderful my dear. Beherit said as he placed a kiss on Penelope’s forehead.

My mother kissed her stubborn husband back and sat with the others.

Now, lets take a moment of silence, and thank the Goddess Demeter for this wonderful harvest. Penelope said.

As the room fell silent, I noticed that Derick’s eyes were piercing right through me. What was wrong with him? My mind continued to wonder about it. He looked away as the blessing was over, and Beherit spoke.

    Derick, how is your family?

Derick took a sip of his wine. They were killed… by Christians. He picked at his bread. I could tell by his gesture that something was very wrong with him, but why had no one else noticed in my family?

Oh dear, I’m sorry. My mother cried.

It is fine. I have shed my tears. Derick mortified.

When did they pass? My youngest brother Cetus, asked.

I rolled my eyes; I had no idea why he had to ask such questions during dinner?

Son, that’s not appropriate. Penelope scolded.

No, it is quite alright. Derick looked at Cetus who was now twirling his cropped brown hair.

They were murdered last winter. I was away for a Sabbat at the Western Coven, and, when I returned to my home I found my parents hanging from a tree. Derick smirked.

I eyed him suspiciously; he did not look very concerned about his parent’s death. It seemed as if he was acting it out. His glorious green eyes held many lies and deadly secrets.

Yes. Beherit interrupted. "Now, I believe the
