It came at night, that first time, when the summer sun was just setting. The land looked eerie in the half darkness, with the ruby sky and the emerald haze creeping across the land. We thought the mists looked strange with their green hue, but it seemed harmless. We went to bed and thought no more about it.

My brother was one of those claimed that first night. I awoke to the sound of my mother’s weeping. I’d never seen a dead body before, and I wished to the gods that my brother hadn’t been the first; he didn’t look at all like himself, with his face all still and slack. The colour of his skin was the same as the mists from the night before.

That was how we knew what had happened.

Mother, I asked at his funeral, why did this happen to us?

But she did not answer.

Where the mists had come from and how they had killed my brother we couldn’t tell. We buried him and moved on with our lives.

The mists returned six weeks
