Chapter 1: Lance
As Lance stood outside the stables, the sun warmed his face, but his chest was filled with ice. He couldn’t believe he was still standing. His heart had cracked in two and fallen to his feet with Meryle’s last words.
Guinevere had gotten in her head. What he couldn’t understand is why Meryle had chosen to believe her. He replayed their last conversation carefully, pausing when he remembered she asked him why he had an affair with Guinevere.
Lance inhaled sharply. He finally understood why Meryle had left him so easily. In her eyes, he was a cheater and a traitor to Camelot.
Interesting weather we’re having,
Merlin said as he rounded the corner. Lightning flashed across the light blue sky, furious and as bright as the sun.
Hope surged within Lance. This meant Meryle’s emotions were out of control. Maybe she was coming back.
He raced over to his horse’s stall and led him to the entrance. Merlin was in the same spot, clinking two glass vials in his hand. Both vials were filled halfway with sparkly white powder, but only one shifted from blue to pink to gold.
My cousin’s never been good at expressing her emotions. Let’s hope she doesn’t burn down the forest,
Merlin said, sighing and shaking his head softly.
You’ll need these,
he added, holding out the vials. Lance hesitated and glanced at the sky.
The lightning was gone and the sun had retreated behind a group of clouds. A rough gust of wind swept through his hair and ruffled the banners hanging on the castle’s turrets. A flock of birds surfaced from the nearby forest. The flurried sound of their beating wings and frenzied chirps lingered in the frigid air.
A prickly sensation ran up his back. He and Merlin were the only ones outside. Lance swiveled in his stance, observing the castle’s windows and covered walkways. No one was there, but he wouldn’t dismiss his instincts. Someone was watching them.
Why do I need this?
he asked as he took the vials. One was labeled Honesty
and the other was marked Attraction
.
"Meryle doesn’t believe in lying. It’s why she’s upset with me. Apparently, she doesn’t realize she’s a hypocrite. You want to know her greatest weakness? She lies to herself. Buries the truth so deep inside that you have to strangle it out of her.
"I just gave you fairy dust. Put it in her drink or sprinkle it on her. I’m sure you can figure out what ‘Honesty’ does. ‘Attraction’ is color-coded. Blue means she’s not attracted to you. Pink means she is. Gold is
