CHILDREN OF THE MOON SERIES
INTRODUCTION
The Children of the Moon are a monastic cult nestled deep in the forests beneath the elven kingdoms north of the Shield Lands. The cult believes the earth’s moon gives them strength and magic and has developed a religion around the moon and its phases. The followers are mostly women, reputed to have magical and unreal physical prowess, and, like the orb they worship, are rumored to be distant, beautiful and cold. Our travels have taken us to their lands, deep in the fragrant woods near an elfin king’s grave, where our adventure begins.
We travel north and east, along the road that until now has been fairly passable and unobstructed, although it is apparent we are getting deeper into the vast forest that surrounds us: tall madrone, lovely swaths of black-plum manzanita, and towering cedar trees provide shade in the morning heat. The trail
winds north and east for at least a mile more. The dense air screams with insects; only a sandy rivulet of fine yellow dust shows us the way.
Should the party travel as far as the abandoned camp site (#2), and miss either the trail to the first camp or the center encampment on the northern side of the trail, the referee can distract the group with the dead camp, and further misdirect the party through the use of phantasmal force* from the south encampment (#3), if the party tarries or is obviously lost.
*This powerful illusion can vary, from clouds of beetles popping up from the ground, to imaginary hail and sleet, will-o-wisps leading nowhere: all designed to confuse, distract and repulse would-be visitors, not unlike the magic of pixies or brownies.
The Village is a loose gathering of homes, which are little more than encampments connected by winding trails scarcely traveled, leaving little trace in the forest: a worn rock, a flattened ribbon of grass are all that tell of the presence of the trails, and an unobservant traveler might pass right by
