elen Keller defined knowledge as love, light, and vision.

I recently saw an interview with Joshua, an author and science writer, Foer. Moonwalking with Einstein, his book, chronicles his adventures and explorations of the world of memory competitions. These worldwide competitions feature individuals who appear to be capable of almost superhuman feats of memory and recall. Memorizing the order of multiple decks of cards (one gentleman took an hour to memorize 60 decks) or memorizing 4000 binary numbers (1011001, etc.) are just a few examples of common feats expected of all competitors. How do they manage it? Are they all Rain

Man-sequel geniuses? Joshua Foer set out to investigate and answer these questions. To his surprise, the competitors he met were not all geniuses.

Despite their eccentricities (how many people do you know who compete in memory competitions?) They were surprisingly normal, and none claimed to have any special abilities. In fact, most of them claimed to have below-average memories. They claimed that the only difference between their turbo-charged brains and those of ordinary people was that they had taken the time to train them. These memory competitors claimed that anyone could improve their memory if they wanted to, as long as they were willing to put in a little effort.

It used to be that having what appeared to be superhuman memory abilities was common. Great orators and philosophers of ancient Greece, such as Cicero and Plato, were known for memorizing lengthy speeches and poems. Furthermore, recall was not limited to these mental giants. The common people of ancient Greece, from farmers to bakers to craftspeople, all had vivid memories.
