Over the past decades, the health and well-being of humanity have remained immensely significant in society, prompting an increased pursuit to explore diverse treatment patterns and approaches. Even during the Stone Age, humans used herbs and flowers around their immediate surroundings to treat infections and diseases. We are now privileged to see advancements in this approach in recent times, including the use of drugs taken from vitamin supplements and other substances created in pharmaceutical labs. Though Eastern and Western medical practices may differ in many ways, we can leverage this difference for our nutritional and overall health benefits.
That said, Eastern medicine is one of the oldest medical systems. It has roots in Asia, where people first experimented with herbs and their effects on humans about 5,000 years ago. In general, these herbs and ointments are believed to help enhance a person’s appearance, health, vitality, and mental clarity. Eastern medicine is sometimes referred to as a supplemental kind of healthcare. This kind of medical practice is interesting because it focuses on a person’s overall health rather than just the surface level of their body. Most importantly, Eastern medicine is suitable for people of all ages, and it does not require individuals to be sick to practice it, as it is primarily focused on prevention. It also focuses on how a person’s energy flows and connects with the mind, soul, and body.
Eastern medicine has a longer history and is more comprehensive compared to Western medicine, as it has been practiced for thousands of years, while the latter only began to emerge in the 19th century. In contrast to Eastern Medicine, which uses food and spices to support the body’s natural ability to cure itself and align with the inner mind, humans discovered during this period that they could change the actions in the human body using synthetic medicines. Western medicine is currently more widely known to the general public. The combination of eastern medical practice and the west’s approach has many health benefits. Still, it helps patients get treatment for their physical health and connect with their inner minds for optimal functionality of their systems.
Eastern and Western medical traditions have a rich history, unique origins, and cultural influences. Eastern medicine is a subspecialty of contemporary medicine that originated in ancient China and has been refined over time. With roots in ancient Chinese, Indian, and Egyptian civilizations, eastern medicine has been practiced for thousands of years. The main focus is on boosting health via natural and herbal supplements and modifying one’s lifestyle through nutrition, exercise, and meditation. It is based on the idea that the body should be in a state of balance and harmony. Other treatments in eastern medicine include tai chi, natural and herbal supplements, and acupuncture, which are fundamentally built around maintaining balance and harmony in the body, mind, and soul.
On the contrary, Western medicine is a science-based healthcare approach developed in Europe and is now used worldwide. Ancient Greek and Roman culture served as the foundation for modern western medicine as it has evolved over the previous few centuries. It is founded on the scientific method and uses medications, surgery, and other medical procedures to treat sickness. Western medicine is frequently regarded as more technologically advanced. Even with this advancement, some people argue that it has a few drawbacks, including the narrow focus on symptoms, reliance on pharmaceuticals and procedures rather than lifestyle changes, and use of a more all-encompassing approach to health, which is why an integration of Eastern medical practice could be essential. Knowing their anatomy, physiology, and pathology is important to understanding and treating illnesses via surgical procedures, medicines, and radiation treatment. Modern western medicine often relies more on clinical tests and scientific research to determine the efficacy of therapies and treatment procedures.
Benefits of Eastern and Western Medicine Practices
As earlier stated, Western and Eastern medicine are different from one another, and each impacts the medical sector differently. It is vital to note that one practice does not override the other; consequently, the two may work in tandem to achieve the intended outcomes. Therefore, it is good to use both strategies since, when one fails, the other can complement.
The two approaches (Systematic for Western and holistic for Eastern), which have distinct philosophies, work to restore the body’s normal energy balance. Eastern healing focuses on treating the whole person by employing methods like meditation, a mental therapy.
Different perspectives offered by Western and Eastern medicine are crucial for our evolving global healthcare system. You may be surprised to discover how many eastern medicine practitioners now work in integrative hospital settings globally.
Despite the apparent differences between Eastern and Western medical techniques, the fundamental ideas seem quite similar. Both use opposing forces to generate energy that powers a network and keeps life alive. This concept is used by both forms of medicine, as will be discussed in the following paragraph, to treat diseases or maintain health. Both aim to enhance existing relationships or create new ones to promote harmony (East) or homeostasis (West) to boost network strength and improve health (resilience). Western medical practitioners commonly do physical exams, monitor blood pressure, review a patient’s medical history, or utilize X-rays and other imaging techniques to diagnose illness. Practitioners of eastern medicine will examine the patient’s tongue, eyes, general color, and pulses in both wrists in addition to asking questions and looking for visible symptoms. They will use all their senses, including hearing, feeling, and smelling, to search for any signs of disharmony that a doctor may miss.
