About this ebook

Foundation for Spiritual Growth is the first volume of the Journey to spiritual maturity series of two books; aimed at establishing the believer on the right spiritual foundation. It is a classic guide for the believer from new birth, where one knows little about Christ and what He has done for them through His death and resurrection, to a progressive spiritual growth; to maturity in the knowledge of Christ and His finished work on the cross and resurrection. This book will help answer some of the questions many believers ask relating to salvation: "How are we saved and what does it mean to be saved?", "What makes us right with God?", "Can we be certain that we will make it to heaven?" and "Can unrepented sin disqualify one from making it to heaven? "Your journey through this book will give you knowledge and understanding that will answer these questions and much more.

    CONCLUSION

    INTRODUCTION

The need for spiritual growth among Christians can never be over emphasized. Peter, the apostle, tells us that as newborn babies we should desire the pure milk of the word, that we may grow thereby (1Peter 2:2, NKJV).

This call is for the newly born-again believers, to crave for the word of God for their spiritual growth; the same way babies need milk for their physical growth. Unfortunately, many believers remain spiritual babies many years after they have been saved. They lack spiritual growth.

The writer of Hebrews also observed lack of spiritual growth among Hebrew believers. He remarked, "You have been believers so long now that you ought to be teaching others. Instead, you need someone to teach you again the basic things about God’s word. You are like babies who need milk and cannot eat solid food. ... So let us stop going over the basic teachings about Christ again and again. Let us go on instead and become mature in our understanding (Hebrews 5:12, 6:1).

The foregoing passage strengthens the need for spiritual growth. The writer is specifically addressing believers who have been in faith for a long time, yet are still immature in understanding spiritual truths. They are not even established on the basic teaching about Christ. They lack proper spiritual foundation.

Journey to Spiritual Maturity is a series of two books: volume 1 focuses on establishing believers on the right foundation for spiritual growth while volume 2 unveils the content, process, and products of spiritual growth.

In this volume, we are exploring some spiritual truths that are foundational building blocks to spiritual maturity. The journey to spiritual maturity starts with having the right foundation.

Join me as we embark on exploring these truths that will strengthen your spiritual foundation for an ever winning life experience.

    CHAPTER 1

    NECESSITY FOR RIGHT SPIRITUAL FOUNDATION

The spiritual growth of a believer can be likened to the process of building a house. It starts with a foundation. The foundation of a house determines its stability, especially when the house is subjected to harsh weather conditions such as floods, strong winds, or even earth quakes. The stronger the foundation of a house, the better it is suited to withstand severe weather conditions.

Similarly, a believer's spiritual life ought to be built on a solid foundation. Jesus taught His disciples this important truth. In Luke chapter 6, Jesus says,

"So why do you keep calling me ‘Lord, Lord!’ when you don’t do what I say? I will show you what it’s like when someone comes to me, listens to my teaching, and then follows it. It is like a person building a house who digs deep and lays the foundation on solid rock. When the floodwaters rise and break against that house, it stands firm because it is well built. But anyone who hears and doesn’t obey is like a person who builds a house without a foundation. When the floods sweep down against that house, it will collapse into a heap of ruins" (Luke 6:46-49).

Jesus likened the people who hear His teachings and practise them to a man who founded his house on a rock. That man's house was able to withstand extreme weather conditions
