Fridays are my favourite day of the week.

Not for the reason you’d think, either. Most people would be looking forward to the weekend, but not me. I’m looking forward to my weekly disciplinary meeting with my boss, Alex.

I always feel self-conscious leaving my desk and walking upstairs, the curious eyes of my colleagues on me as I pass them by. I’m relatively new here, so I hope most of them think I’m still on probation, that I just have to check in with the boss to make sure I’m keeping up with my training and settling in at work.

I can’t imagine what they’d think if they knew the truth.

Alex’s PA, Sharon, greets me when I arrive on the next floor. She knows I’m being disciplined – but she thinks it’s the standard formal procedure.

She has no idea Alex’s idea of discipline is… spicier than that.

Here for your weekly meeting with Mr Winters? she asks. I resist the urge to roll my eyes. She knows I am, she just wants to hear me say it.

Yes, I murmur, my head tilted down towards the floor. I try to look humble, but really I’m afraid if I meet her shrewd gaze she’ll see the excitement written all over my face.

I pass by Sharon’s little office – barely more than a cupboard, really, and mostly filled with old filing cabinets – and walk down the corridor to the private office at the end where Alex works. My heart is hammering in my chest, adrenaline quickening my pulse and heating my blood with the thought of what’s to come.

I knock softly on Alex’s door. I hear him say something indistinct from inside the room, so I open the door and slip inside. He’s seated at his desk, half turned away from me. When he looks up I realise he has the phone cradled against his ear.

Realising my mistake, I blush, intending to
