Becca? The boss wants to see you.

I look up from my computer screen, my pulse fluttering at the summons. Did he say why? I ask hesitantly.

Sharon, his PA, smirks unpleasantly. No, he didn’t. But you’d better not keep him waiting.

My stomach twists with nervous apprehension, but I paste a smile on my face and stand up, smoothing down my skirt and making sure my blouse is still neatly tucked in. Is there time to check my hair in the bathroom mirror? No, it’s probably fine.

I take a deep breath and walk across the open plan office, the sound of clacking keyboards rising up all around me, the printer churning out pages in the background. It’s familiar, monotonous – but not soothing.

I’m worried about why Alex, my boss, wants to see me. Did I do something wrong?

I head up a flight of stairs and then down the short corridor to my boss’s private office, knocking timidly on the door.

Come in, he calls from inside, and I steel myself before pushing down on the handle.

You wanted to see me?

Ah, Becca. Take a seat.

I shut the door behind me just in case I’m about to get a bollocking. I don’t want anyone to overhear me getting told off.

Is this about the delay with the accounts? I hedge, sitting down and clasping my hands in my lap, trying to appear calm and professional even though I’m on edge.

Alex raises one eyebrow. No, Becca, this isn’t about the accounts. He reaches into a drawer and pulls out a slim brown cardboard box, one corner slightly dented, the ends sealed with packing tape. It’s about this.

I frown, not understanding. What is that?

You tell me, he says, sliding the parcel across his desk. I look at the address label. It’s got my name on it, just above the address for this building…
