Chapter 1
A daughter is born
Thursday, May 9, 1996… I remember the day well. My wife, Tammy, and I arrived at the hospital around 5:30am to be prepped for our child's arrival around 7:30. We had spent about three hours the previous day at the hospital to get all of our paperwork and such completed so we could move right into getting Tammy ready for her C-section this morning. I am old-fashioned, so I did not know if we were going to have a boy or a girl. Our two-year-old son, Joshua, was at home with my mom. Shortly after we arrived, we were told that the paperwork we had completed the previous day could not be found. I was told to wait in a private waiting room while the paperwork was completed until I was summoned to go into the surgery room with Tammy for the C-section. I watched an entire hour-long episode of Sportscenter on ESPN and thought I should check on progress with the paperwork. I found Tammy and the medical staff about to enter the surgery room. Where have you been? We've been looking for you
, they asked. Exactly where you told me to wait. Were you about to do this without me?
I answered. So the day did not begin well.
The medical staff wheeled Tammy into the surgery room with me in tow and administered her epidural. The doctors began the surgery to deliver our child. Apparently Tammy did not respond well to the anesthesia as she told the doctors she could feel what they were doing. She was given additional anesthesia and promptly entered a semiconscious state. I was not feeling comfortable about the way things were progressing. Then Tammy began moaning as if she were still feeling the surgery happening to her. Now I was becoming angry with the way things were progressing. The lead doctor said, Put her all the way under and get him out of here.
I was hurriedly escorted out of the room. Feeling angry and frustrated, I stood in the hallway and ripped my scrubs off. A few minutes later, a kind nurse found me in the hallway and told me that I had a new daughter. She had, however, been impacted by the sudden addition of anesthesia and had been taken to NICU for observation. The nurse took me to scrub up and get new scrubs so that I could go see my daughter. I remember so well the first time I saw her. She was on her knees and chest and squirming like a little worm. My first thought was how much she looked like her brother when he was newborn. Then I thought that I was also now dad to a daughter, Emily Marie Martin. My day was definitely getting better.
Emily Marie Martin, how did we decide on that name? Well, Tammy and I knew that we wanted to honor God with the children we would have because of the immeasurable grace He would give us through them. We also felt that our children would either be important or need to be tough or
