CHAPTER ONE
Ramona felt around in the darkness, desperate, and hoped that her hand would feel something familiar, something she could use as a weapon.
Her right eye throbbed from the vicious punch from one of her abductors.
She had fought with all my might, scratching and kicking, but in the end, she had been powerless against the two hulking brutes who subdued her with little effort, much to her annoyance.
They zip-tied her hands, then dumped me unceremoniously in the back of the van.
Her only insignificant victory was that she had scratched one abductor’s face with my fingernails and drew blood. She could feel the slight crust under some of my fingernails still. Gross.
Her head had hit something hard when her body hit the floor of the van. A wooden log maybe, but she couldn’t be sure. All she knew was that it hurt like hell.
Now she had a raging headache to show for it. However, this wasn’t the time to worry about any of that. She had to make her escape from there wherever there was. It was her one and only focus.
She rubbed her temples for a minute, willing the headache to disappear. The small voice that startled her and distracted her from the gruesome pain she was feeling, lost her in concentration, jolted her out of it.

a tiny little voice sobbed just a few feet away from her.
Ramona’s mind snapped back to the reality of the situation. For a minute, she had forgotten that she was not alone.
The two killers had also thrown into the van the little girl, who was now speaking before they had done the same to her.
The poor girl was in the room with her. Ramona stood up with great care and navigated her way through the dark, towards where the voice was emanating. She seemed to be at the far end of what felt like a long couch that they both occupied.
Using her knee as a guide, she nudged her way from one end of the couch to the other. At the first touch, once she was close enough to her, the little girl grabbed Ramona in a tight hug and sobbed harder.
The small child was terrified, which was understandable. Ramona did nothing but hold and stroke her soft hair, remembering that it was a lovely shade of brown from the quick glance she had on the street.
It was important for the frightened girl to get all the crying out and be done with it. If they had any chance of escape, she needed her to be aware. Brave,
