About the Author
Prologue
Without a single word being uttered, the stranger was there with Ramona the following morning. He held her hand, and his touch communicated his feelings to her. Ramona felt both at peace and protected.
His name was Rafael, though shortly she would refer to him as Rafa. He had unwittingly become a coyote for a gangster. He recounted his story to her.
It hadn’t been his first choice, but the pickings were slim after his return from military service, where he had been an elite sniper.
The limp resulted from a bullet that had caused permanent bone damage, which caused a lot of pain.
An honorable discharge meant nothing in the real world, and his work life became a series of odd jobs.
An old friend had recommended him for a job as a driver with the firm he worked for, and it took little to persuade him.
The pay was very high, so he wasn’t naïve about the business they might be involved in.
It didn’t surprise him when told it was illegal gambling casinos operating in constantly on the move rigs.
He hadn’t cared too much. After all, the players were willing participants, and it was their money to lose.
All had gone well for the first seven months. His job comprised of driving a truck across state lines and then he would afterwards be relieved by another. They had shown him the inside of one rig to allay his fears.
He didn’t want to be caught running drugs or weapons; he had told them. Assured it was only gambling, he relaxed, and they were proud of him, even giving him bonuses when he arrived early. It was a sweet gig, and he had no complaints.
The week before, they asked him to pull a shift on his day off and he accepted. It meant double the money, which would go a long way since he helped his sister and niece out.
It wasn’t a big rig that time, more like a van. He remembered wondering how all the gambling tables and other equipment could fit in such a small space, but he reasoned maybe it was only equipment.
A flat tire along his route had forced him to stop, and it pissed him off because it would eat into his bonus if he dawdled.
He therefore, wanted to fix the flat and get going. The kit was under the passenger seat next to him, so he grabbed it and made his way around the back of the van.
They had securely mounted the spare tire to the exterior of the van, eliminating any need to open it.
There was no-one around as far as he could see and so it surprised him to hear what seemed like a moan. His ears pricked up. Maybe it was a wild boar or some other animal and he relaxed.
Then he heard it again and now knew the sound came from inside the van. Shock overwhelmed him upon realizing that.
He wavered between opening the van and ignoring the noise, but if there was a hurt person, he had to help.
Perhaps they had somehow gotten trapped while the truck was being loaded.
He retrieved the key from the glove compartment. It was where they always kept them in a sealed envelope.
He didn’t hesitate to break the seal and open the van door. What he found dismayed
