Introduction
When you wake up in the morning, what is the first thought that crosses your mind? Excitement at the prospect of a new day? Or dread at the prospect of a new day? People who have learned to manage their stress embrace the new day. It is not that they are not concerned about what lies ahead of them. Rather, they don’t allow those thoughts to overpower and paralyze them. People who belong to the second group are yet to bring their stress under control and as a result, they may suffer from varying forms of anxiety. Chances are, you belong in the second group and you are eager to find out how to manage your stress so that you can enjoy the opportunities that every moment brings to you. If that is your intention, you have got the right book in your hands.
This book, Stress and Anxiety Management, How to Identify Stressors, Manage Anxiety Attacks and Thrive in a World of Chaos is created to help you identify the causes of your stress, understand how it works in your body, and then figure out how to get it under control through reliable and trusted methods. These methods are based on scientific facts and the experiential showing knowledge of someone who has gone through debilitating stress and anxiety attacks. This book is not packaged to sell medicine or the theoretical over-bloated ideas of some shrink to you. It is deeper than that.
It is a factual guide to managing stress that is based on the curated experiences of someone (yours truly) who has been exactly where you are but learned how to turn the ship around and steer life in the direction I wanted it to go. Now, because of the tremendous success of that journey, I have taken it upon myself to share my process with you so that you can replicate the same results. In this book, you will uncover
Why you feel the way you do
What your options are when it comes to anxiety attacks
The many ways you can reprogram your mind and turn that fear around
Non-medicated methods of keeping stress under control
How to create a health plan that keeps you in the right mindset
The most important thing you are going to learn in this book is how to take charge of your life when you are going through stressful periods in life. You will learn to understand that while you can’t control the events of life, the way you react to them mentally, physically, and emotionally is entirely within your control. Your attitude under stress is dependent on the mindset that you have towards it. This book will help you build the right mentality to ensure you are resilient and resourceful in managing your stress. You will understand that stress is not the enemy you think it is. With the right thought process, stress can become your ally in this chaotic world that we live in. And so, if any of this sounds appealing to you, turn over to the next page and begin your journey.
Chapter One
Understanding Anxiety
Management
Before you undergo any kind of treatment whether it is medical or physiological, it is important to understand exactly what you are dealing with. And that is what we are going to do in this chapter. We will explore the full meaning of anxiety and what that implies to our health and general well-being. I feel like the word, ‘anxiety’ has been thrown around a lot without people fully understanding what it means. There are certain things we experience that might manifest as anxiety but it could be something else. Or perhaps you are not experiencing the typical symptoms of anxiety even though that is exactly what you are going through. I hope that this chapter helps you achieve understanding in this regard. Not everyone gets clinically diagnosed with anxiety and while this is important, I believe that being aware can push you to get help sooner rather than later. It will also help you make sense of some of the things you are going through in life and how you respond to events.
What is anxiety?
There are several forms of anxiety but I am going to focus on what people commonly experience. The first is anxiety as a feeling; which everyone has from time to time. And then you also have an anxiety disorder which is what happens when your anxiety becomes chronic and negatively impacts your mental health. The first definition covers the basic anxiety that everyone feels and is defined as intense fear or worry that persists over common everyday situations. Perhaps you have an exam that is coming up. It is perfectly natural to feel anxious about the exam because you are worried about your scores and how your performance will affect your future and so on.
In itself, anxiety is not a negative emotion. It is there to help us align with our objectives. This is what I mean by that. Let us say you have a job interview tomorrow. If you are overconfident in your abilities, you might overlook certain important aspects of a job application and the resultant effect could be the failure to secure the job. Anxiety will make you double-check your resume, your presentation as well as whatever research you can come up with regarding that job interview. And this double-checking will help you meet your objective which is to score very well at that job interview so that you can secure the job. This is how normal anxiety helps us.
However, when your anxiety levels are on overdrive, rather than spur you in the direction of your goals and objectives, it can act as a paralyzing agent that traps you
