My eyes were deceiving me.  They had to be.  Standing inside the belly of the strange vessel, I reached out to touch the smooth white walls that were cool to the touch.  Light seemed to emanate from everywhere, from the walls, the floor, the ceiling.

We were clearly in the control room of the vessel.  An entire wall was covered with various buttons, levers, and dials.

Maura, Kenzie said.  Come see this.

Distracted by the clear glass floor, I stared at the distant earth below us, mesmerized by the changes in the planet I barely recognized.  Green, gray clouds hung over the Earth’s atmosphere, changing our beautiful blue planet into an ugly and dead one. What happened?

Maura, he called out again.

This is just so freaky, I said as I made my way to him, my gaze still on the floor.  What sort of spaceship is this?

He grinned.  One that enjoys riddles, enigmas and puzzles.  He pointed to the locked drawer that he’d just managed to open.

How’d you do that? I said, running my fingers over the intricate lock.

He shrugged.  I put the puzzle together.  Look at all the small pieces that move about and can be configured in a hundred different ways.

I leaned closer and scrutinized the small metal pieces that looked like a futuristic jigsaw puzzle.  Contained within a small frame just below the locking mechanism, the pieces were mobile all while clinging to the metal drawer like magnets.

I wanted to leave you the honor of opening the drawer, Kenzie said.  He made an elegant and dramatic gesture toward the drawer.

Thanks.  Nodding, I pulled back on the metal handle.

A book? Kenzie said.

We stared at the old-world object that seemed so out of place in the ultra-modern spaceship.

And it looks so old, I said as I passed my hand over the tattered cover.  Antique.

Maybe it’s a guidebook to help us bring this thing back home.

I glanced at him and grinned.  If only it could be that easy.

When I pulled my hand away from the book, a title appeared on the cover.

That wasn’t there a second ago, I said.

The Last Lodge on Earth, he read.

I picked up the book and opened it to the first page.

What does it say?

The monsters are people, I read with a frown.

He chuckled sardonically.  Really?

I shifted over to show him the page.  Just as he leaned in to take a closer look...

Whoa!  What just happened? he let out.

I stared at the blank page in disbelief.  The sentence I’d just read to him had disappeared.

I don’t get it, I said with a shake of my head.  It’s gone.  The words just disappeared.

I just had a split second to see that there were words on the page at all... and then... nothing.

The monsters are people, I said.  That’s what the page said.  We have to remember that.

But why erase the page?

Equally confused, I stared at the page as if willing the words to return.  It must be a clue in it of itself, I muttered.  The words disappeared.  That must mean something."

You mean, like the people... People disappeared, Kenzie said.  Is that the link?

I nodded then shrugged.  Maybe.  I stared at the blank page.  The person who wrote this... maybe that’s what they’re trying to say.  That the people disappeared.

I looked at him, startled by my sudden revelation.  Maybe... just maybe, even my dad, Simon.  He disappeared, too!

Biting his bottom lip, Kenzie nodded his agreement.  How? he said.  That’s what we have to find out.  How did he disappear?

And why? I added.

I looked around at the vast and empty space of the vessel.  Look at where we are, I said.  We’re somewhere in the future.  Look at the Earth below us.  It’s nothing like the planet we left behind.  What does all that mean?

We found clues that led us here, Kenzie said.  We didn’t just accidentally stumble into this spaceship.  We were led here... deliberately.  There’s a reason for that.

My dad? I said.  Still clinging to the precious book, I walked around and came to a control panel.  Hundreds of buttons waited for a command.  Do you think he could be here?  In this spaceship?

The control panel, with its hundreds of colored buttons, suddenly flickered to life.  Lights blinked on and off across the panel as if answering my question.

What do you think this means? Kenzie said as he came up beside me.  Is this spaceship listening to us?  Answering us?

Sure seems that way.

Do you think it’s trying to tell us what button to push?

I smirked.  Look at all these flashing buttons.  How can it be telling us to press one when they are all flashing?

He chuckled and shrugged.  Maybe if we took another look at the book... like at the other pages.

Right, I muttered.  Fumbling with the book, I flipped through the pages.  They’re all blank, I said.  Every one of them.

As I prepared to slam the useless book shut, Kenzie reached out to mark a page.

Look at the last page, he said.

Frowning, I did as he said and was surprised to see big, bold black letters.

Okay, I said as I prepared to read.  Simon says the following: Last is first.

Huh?

Out is second.

That makes even less sense.

Side is third, I went on.

What?

Time is fourth.  I looked up at him.  What do you make of that?

I have no idea.  Last is first, out is second, side is third and time is fourth.  None of that makes any sense.

I looked at the words and shook my head.

What is it, Maura? Kenzie said.  Do you understand this clue?

Not yet, I said.  But I have a feeling that this clue is from my father and not the lodge.  All the other clues seemed to come from the lodge.  But not this one.  We must figure this one out.  It’s vital.

Okay, Kenzie said as he leaned back against the curved white wall of the spaceship.  Four sentences.  We have four short and concise phrases.  Four.

Right, I said, trying to follow his logic.

"So... four of what?

I looked down at the control panel.  The buttons had stopped flashing and seemed to wait for our next move.  What about all these buttons?

It’s worth a try.

Okay... so last is first.  Let’s try to first press a button.

A fourth button.  But there are hundreds.

I pointed to the top corner of the panel.  Over there.  Look.  There are only five rows of four buttons.

Kenzie reached out to press the last button of the fourth row.  Okay.  Now what?

Then... out is second.  I looked around.  I have no idea what that could mean.  Out.  What is out?

Kenzie looked over my shoulder.  There’s a door over there.  Do you think it could be the way out?

We went to the massive door that was latched and locked tight.

Look at that, I said pointing to the lock.  The door needs four letters in order to open it.

Great.  So, we got nowhere.
