    Paperback Devil - Jamie Evans

    S4: E1

Hello, my name is Peter Kargosi and I have no idea if you have read any of my other adventures or not. But here is a quick update, or perhaps a refresher. I have met aliens (friendly and not so friendly). I have dealt with a crazy 160-year-old man that ate the souls of the living. And then there was a misunderstood ghost on an island that killed everyone but me. That reminds me, I’m not allowed back in California because of that little adventure. But lately nothing has happened. I mean, nothing weird or strange. I have been working full time at Doc’s bookstore and I have been writing stories for Sinister Sightings Newsletter. Most of the stories are just researched and I write up an article. But I do miss the hands-on research. You know the adventure... going out in the field and finding a great story to write about. Lately after work I go home and watch movies with my best friend Sweet Tooth. So life right now is great. Boring but a good boring. There are no complaints. But I miss some adventures. Then today I got a letter hand delivered to me at the bookstore. A Miss S signed it and it said for me to be at her home tomorrow morning at the earliest I can come. She said in the letter that it would pay very well. She promises it is paranormal in nature and she really needs my help... also I was recommended to her by a woman police officer. Maybe it was Jennifer?

So you going? Sweet Tooth said as he eyed the last slice of pizza.

Why not? And you can have the last piece.

Sweet Tooth smiled and grabbed the slice of pizza and said, Want me to come?

Nah, you sleep in... I’ll give you the details when I get back.

Sweet Tooth nodded and took a big bite of the slice.

By the way, happy birthday month, Sweet Tooth said with a mouth full of pizza.

Thanks. What do you want to do? Movies and food like always?

Of course! And guess what? Kevin Costner has a new movie coming out... They are calling it Mad Max on water, said Sweet Tooth as he fumbled to open his Dr. Pepper.

Mad Max on water? Sounds super awesome. We’ll go see that.

Sweet Tooth smiled and sat back on the couch, taking a drink from his can of soda. He looked at the empty box of pizza (Maybe hoping an extra slice would materialize) and started the movie again. We were watching Deep Red. I watched for a few more minutes and went to bed, knowing I don’t do well waking up early in the morning. I fell asleep right away.

I don’t know if you have dreams like this... but I had one last night. It was a dream that felt very real, and it went in perfect order. I didn’t jump around from place to place or meet different people. It was like an episode of a TV show. It was very straightforward. I was walking down an endless tunnel, being led by an ancient-looking lady. She looked to be dressed in old clothing... maybe from the 1920s. The tunnel was dark, and it seemed we walked forever. I saw a light, and it was red. We walked towards it and as I got closer; I got warmer. It became so hot that I peeled off my jacket and started to sweat. But I kept walking. I heard a woman scream and then I woke up. It felt so real. I sat up in bed, drenched with sweat. I felt like I jumped into a warm lake. I tried to go back to sleep, but I just laid there in bed and stared at the ceiling until the alarm went off. Waking up to country music was not a great way to start the day. I really need to remember to change the station on my alarm.

Two cold boiled eggs with 2 slices of cold bacon for breakfast. But at least the coffee was warm. I grabbed my coat and hat and headed out the door. I popped one egg in my mouth, the other in my pocket. I looked at the sky and it looked like no rain... for now. Ohio weather can change in minutes. So you never know for sure. I noticed I left the top down again and knew I was in for a damp seat. I found an old towel in the trunk and used that to sit on. I jumped into my car, turned the key and was halfway down the road before I realized I forgot my gun. I checked my glove box... maybe it’s in there. Nope. It was at home by my bed, next to a copy of the Dain Curse. I turned down a not so private road, took a shortcut through a parking lot and was on the highway in seconds. There was no one on the road and I went about 70 mph all the way down to the old neighborhood (Old money) in Columbus, Ohio.

I’ll admit, I don’t like to drive. I used to like it. But as I get older... Well, I just don’t anymore. If I could live in a city, the transportation system would allow me to not drive a car. I would love it. But I live in Columbus, Ohio, and it seems they frown upon public transportation. Everything here is so spread out and the buses we have are minimal... and a taxi? Forget it. It would cost you a month’s rent and half the time they don’t show up when you call them. I turned off the radio and looked one more time at the piece of paper with the directions and address I was looking for (written in tiny lettering, thanks Yama).

I pulled up to a curb and stopped. I glanced to my right and saw a giant house that looked like it had been there since the Civil War. In front of me were a couple jogging in bright yellow and pink suits. They seemed to be at an age where walking would be hard to do. Yet they were jogging. Both did that creepy jog people do... when their hands are limp like a T-Rex. Maybe I’m the only one that gets creeped out by old people. I got out of my car and tried putting the top up. But of course it was a no go. I looked at the dark clouds above me and just hoped it wouldn’t rain. I walked up towards the massive brick house. It was large and I could tell it had at least 14 rooms. I wouldn’t even call it a house. I would call it a mansion. The red bricks looked larger than normal sized bricks and the windows were large as well. Some were round. I have not seen a house like this in a long time. The walkway looked to be made of stones, some with colors of blue and gray. I looked at them as I walked and was impressed at how beautiful just the walkway was in this place. I glanced to my right and to my left and saw the houses on either side were nice, but not up to the standards of this mansion. They just don’t make houses like this anymore. I got to the door and looked for a doorbell. I couldn’t find it, so I knocked. The door was a very thick dark brown wood and slightly weathered, and I wasn’t sure anyone heard my knock. So I knocked again... but just a bit harder. Nothing. I pushed on the handle and it clicked. I nuzzled the door, and it swung open. I stood there for a few seconds, looking for anyone to come up to me. No one did. I took one step into the home and said, Hello?

    Nothing.

I took a few more steps in and noticed the giant paintings that were hanging on the walls. One in front of me hung very high above a doorway that looked to lead to a hallway to perhaps more doors. To my left was another giant painting. It looked to be a witch trial, but I wasn’t sure. I’m not good at guessing sizes. But my guess was that they were at least 10 feet tall and 10 feet wide. I walked to my right to inspect one of the paintings. The closer I got, the more details came into view. It looked much better further away. But up close I noticed weird creatures that were peeking out behind trees and fences...one was peeking through a window from an attic in a farmhouse further away. It was a man with a pig face. I squinted, trying to see if there were any more hidden creatures. Behind a tree. Looking at what was going on in the painting was a man with a goat's head. I saw some cursive writing on the bottom right-hand corner of the painting. It read: Skuller... lives... by death... lives forever... blood and disease are food for them. I’m guessing this artist didn’t work for Hallmark. I stepped back to look at the painting again. Footsteps behind me made me turn. A young girl, maybe 16 years old, walked across the hallway. She was wearing a skirt and shirt that maybe fit her when she was 10. She looked at me as she bit down on an apple. She licked the part she bit off. Her tongue danced around the apple like it was looking for something. Her eyes never left mine as she slowly glided away. A soft giggle is all I heard as she disappeared.

    Sir, are you Peter Kargosi?

I turned back around to see a man that looked like Tor Johnson. Basically, he was big and scary.

    Yes, I am, I said.

Excellent. She is waiting for you. Please follow me, Sir.

The Butler (I guess he was the butler) turned and walked away and I followed. I glanced over my shoulder to see if the girl I saw had come back.

    She had not.

The butler took me up some stairs that were very narrow. They had a red carpet on them and looked rather worn. We turned right and entered a hallway. It had pictures on the walls... all of them black and white, and I recognized some people in them. TV stars, movie stars, politicians, etc. The rest, I guessed, were family or just random people. Who knows? There were at least 200 photos on both sides of the hallway. I don’t know why, but I checked one for dust as I drifted by. Nothing. I’m impressed. The butler looked back at me and smiled. He turned to his
