Forgotten - S.B. O'Riley
The Rain
I did something today,
Something I had not done
In quite some time actually.
––––––––
I stood out in the pouring rain,
Not really going anywhere,
None of the usual
Dashing between falling drops
On my way to nowhere,
No trying to avoid getting soaked.
In fact, for a change,
I welcomed it.
––––––––
I just stood there,
Gazing upwards into a darkened sky,
Each drop greeting me
On its way to join its companions.
––––––––
Even though the mid-winter winds
Were cold and daunting,
I embraced them.
I embraced each half-frozen droplet
As they beat against my flesh,
All-the-while, just standing there.
––––––––
I know,
Not the smartest thing to do,
Considering.
But, as foolish as it appeared,
It felt freeing.
––––––––
It made me feel something that
I hadn’t felt in such a long time,
Something I look forward to one day
Feel again.
It made me feel alive!
––––––––
I did something today,
Something I had not done
In quite some time actually.
Perhaps,
When the next rain comes,
Just maybe,
I’ll stand out in it as well?
Forgotten
A tear falls
Silent,
Unnoticed by whom it was shed for.
––––––––
No one really knows
Or, even cares
What has become of him.
What once was
Is no more,
A distant memory.
What could have been
Should have been
Will never be,
Lost in the darkness of his loneliness.
––––––––
Another tear falls
Silent,
Unnoticed by whom it was shed for.
The Darkest Corner
In the darkest corner
On the darkest night
One man, sat alone.
To powerless to move
To powerless to fight,
For his soul
Could not yet
Feel the light.
––––––––
Through trial and error
Suffering was learned
Defeat was second nature,
It usually came
At a price too high
One few
Could afford
To pay.
––––––––
In the darkest corner
On the darkest night
One man, sat alone,
For an end he pleaded
As his spirit faltered
Thoughts of mercy
All but a dream.
All that was left
Were fading hopes
And lost dreams,
As he wondered
How much more
He could bear.
––––––––
In the darkest corner
On the darkest night
One man, sat alone,
To powerless to move,
To powerless to fight,
For forgiveness
Never came.
Searching
It’s in the pain of those I love
My own agony chooses to live,
Knowing it was I,
Not some stranger,
Who brought their hearts
This sorrow.
Throughout one’s life
A heart learns many things
Yet, no matter
How hard we try
We can’t teach it to forget.
––––––––
As for me,
My own heart see’s the struggles
Of what I’ve put them through.
Even as, I write these thoughts
My soul searches for its release.
––––––––
But, I know I cannot claim
What has yet to be offered,
It’s as if the words needed
Were too sacred to be spoken,
They elude my prayers,
Only to be found in the darkness
Of my own,
Misguided dreams.
––––––––
Each night, without fail,
Your forgiveness, their forgiveness,
Is sought,
And sometimes, even found,
Only to be lost once more
With the coming of the dawn.
Into The Darkness
Into the darkness
His thoughts start to creep
Looking, searching
For all that he’s lost.
Faces, places, things of the past
Tormenting his memories
Then haunting his dreams.
––––––––
Into the darkness
His hope now strays
Lost in the shadows
His own mind creates.
His sanity lost
Or was it taken away?
No one’s left to tell him
Everything will be okay.
––––––––
Into the darkness
His spirit now fades
His humanity lost forever
For
