The origin of Valentine's Day is steeped in mystery, but legend has it that Valentine was a young Roman who was not converted to Christianity but, alas, fell in love with a Christian maiden during the time of Diocletian's persecutions. The maiden had been captured with other followers and thrown into prison, awaiting torture. Valentine did not yet have the courage to convert and accompany his beloved to the gallows ... but he loved her so much, ... and did everything he could to save her. It seems that he tried to bribe noble patricians to lilberate her in vain.

And that he even accepted a rocky escape. Unfortunately, he did not succeed and had to resign himself to seeing his beloved fed to lions.
