    Amazing Encounters

    Luke 24:1–12

    Background Scripture: Luke 24:1–12

BUT on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb, taking the spices that they had prepared.

2 They found the stone rolled away from the tomb,

3 but when they went in, they did not find the body.

4 While they were perplexed about this, suddenly two men in dazzling clothes stood beside them.

5 The women were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, "Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen.

6 Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee,

7 that the Son of Man must be handed over to sinners, and be crucified, and on the third day rise again."

8 Then they remembered his words,

9 and returning from the tomb, they told all this to the eleven and to all the rest.

10 Now it was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them who told this to the apostles.

11 But these words seemed to them an idle tale, and they did not believe them.

12 But Peter got up and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen cloths by themselves; then he went home, amazed at what had happened.

    Good News Is Worth Celebrating

Celebrations and good news go hand in hand. Naturally, we want to share our positive experiences with those we care about and rejoice in celebration with them. Be it graduations, prom, or acceptance into the program of our dreams, spreading good news comes to us easily. Sharing our excitement and joy with others, especially those we are close to is always a great feeling. We celebrate our accomplishments in many different ways such as hosting parties and dinners or through gift exchanges and gift cards..

In today’s Scripture, we examined what takes place after the crucifixion and burial of Jesus. The women went to the tomb to adorn His body with spices and oils, which was a customary practice during this time. However, when they entered the tomb, the women found something miraculous. Jesus was resurrected. This news was shared to them by two men dressed in glowing white robes. They were assumed to be angels. The women visiting the tomb were blessed by the astonishing reality of Jesus’ resurrection. At first, they were afraid, but they soon became excited and overjoyed. They shared their excitement with the disciples!

When we encounter the numerous miracles and blessings from the Lord, we may initially be afraid or shocked by what we see, hear, or learn. Yet, it is important to understand and acknowledge the power of our Lord Jesus Christ. In knowing and accepting the power of Christ, we can then celebrate the Good News and gift of salvation with others.

    The Angels Announce Jesus’ Resurrection

Today’s Scripture begins after the crucifixion and burial of Jesus. Three days after Jesus was crucified and placed in the tomb, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and a few other women went to the tomb to tend to Jesus’ body. They brought spices they had prepared to dress His body. The women arrived at the tomb only to find the large stone was rolled away from the entrance. Once they approached the entrance, they discovered that Jesus’ body was gone. While the women worried and wondered what happened to Him, two men appeared wearing robes that were a luminous white that shined like lightning. These two men in dazzling white garments are angels, which is confirmed later in Luke 24:23.

Have you ever experienced circumstances that are not easily explained?

Do you believe in the possibility of miracles?

The sudden appearance of the two angels frightened the women. In verse 5, the angels asked the women, Why do you look for the living among the dead? The angels reminded the women what Jesus told His followers about his great purpose. Jesus understood everything happened to him for a reason and his suffering was for a greater cause. He also knew that he would not be defeated by death and would rise again three days after he was crucified. The angels called the women to remember his words and teachings. This was the beginning of their deeper understanding of Jesus’
