    An Attitude of Gratitude

    Leviticus 13:45–46; Luke 17:11–19

    Background Scripture: Leviticus 13–14; Luke 5:12–16; 17:11–19

THE person who has the leprous disease shall wear torn clothes and let the hair of his head be disheveled; and he shall cover his upper lip and cry out, Unclean, unclean.

46 He shall remain unclean as long as he has the disease; he is unclean. He shall live alone; his dwelling shall be outside the camp.

11 On the way to Jerusalem Jesus was going through the region between Samaria and Galilee.

12 As he entered a village, ten lepers approached him. Keeping their distance,

13 they called out, saying, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!

14 When he saw them, he said to them, Go and show yourselves to the priests. And as they went, they were made clean.

15 Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice.

16 He prostrated himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him. And he was a Samaritan.

17 Then Jesus asked, "Were not ten made clean? But the other nine, where are they?

18 Was none of them found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?"

19 Then he said to him, Get up and go on your way; your faith has made you well.

What comes to mind when you hear the word thanksgiving? How often do you give thanks to God, your parents, and those who are nice and kind to you? It is easy to complain about what is not going well in our lives and forget about all the acts of kindness that have been shown to us by God directly and through other people. Have you ever done anything for someone and they didn’t seem grateful? How did that make you feel? If you turn on the news and see the terrible damage done from fires, storms, and hurricanes, often those who have survived lack gratefulness to God. To whom do you give the credit when you are saved from a horrible situation? There are things that only God can do, so He alone is worthy of our praise. In today’s lesson we will find out how a foreigner responded to the awesome miracle Jesus performed in his life.

    A Portrait of a Disease

In the days of Moses, the law of God was strictly enforced. If a person became infected with leprosy, a disfiguring skin disease, they had to be thoroughly examined by the priest to determine whether they could be considered ceremonially unclean. Once a diagnosis was given, the leper had to quarantine himself for several days. They could not have their heads covered and had to go around making everyone aware they were sick by yelling, Unclean! Unclean! Can you imagine that? Leprosy was highly contagious, so it was against the law to hide their symptoms. Also, anything a leper touched had to be thoroughly cleaned (Lev.15:1–12). Lepers were considered outcasts because no one could come around them for fear of catching it. The quarantine was to stop the spread and also to protect the infected individual. It was a requirement for the individual to be in a state of sadness because of his condition. He couldn’t be around others who were healthy and going about their normal lives. To show his sadness, he had to tear his clothes as a sign of his condition. He also had to shave his head so his sores were clearly visible. In order to be considered clean after quarantine, the leper had to present himself to the priest again and make an animal sacrifice that was acceptable according to the law. How did the COVID-19 quarantine affect you? Did you or anyone in your family have feelings of loneliness and
