    Chapter One

    The treehouse was beautiful.

The whole resort was beautiful, but Julia was suddenly glad she’d paid extra to have something just off trail and away from the main building.

It wasn’t a treehouse in the childhood sense—climbing had never been her strong suit. No, these were exclusive deluxe resort accommodations, like a luxury log cabin, nestled anywhere from thirty to two hundred feet above ground, nestled in the California redwood trees.

And unlike childhood treehouses—which hand nails haphazardly hammered in willy-nilly, these treehouses were built without the use of nails and guaranteed no harm was done to the trees. They were completely built around the trunk, limbs, and branches, blended in to the forest around it, complete with a wrap-around porch with hammocks.

Below her, Julia made out the walking path, surrounded by wildflowers and a few lamps glowing yellow as the sun began to set.

The whole setting looked like something off a postcard, or a Thomas Kinkaid painting.

It was not so far away from the main building that she would have any troubles walking back and forth for meals—despite the kitchenette in the treehouse, Julia had no plans of cooking—or the drinks and celebrating that was going on during Crimson Moon Hideaway’s first anniversary.

Which she planned on partaking in a little, even though she was actually there to work.

But it gave the impression of privacy.

Which would definitely get her creative juices flowing.

If Julia wanted some time alone, or to go to bed early, she wouldn’t have to worry about the music or chatting of the other guests.

She was here to refresh, to work and take in the lovely scenery.

    And maybe to forget.

Her bad leg was already feeling a little tight by the time she made it to the front door of the little cabin. Someone had offered to carry her bag for her, but she’d declined, thinking she wouldn’t needed it.

Now, she just wanted to get inside and put her leg up, maybe get a heat pack out before she even thought about unpacking.

Julia needed to stretch it out and get herself ready before she could so much as walk back, let alone do any jogging.

Being a cheetah shifter meant running was kind of important to her, and her physiotherapist had given her the okay to do it, but only if she promised to stretch thoroughly, using her heat and ice packs, and stop when it felt like it was getting to be too much.

Since her profession required a lot of sitting or standing in place, if she didn’t get a good run in her, she got a little… irritable.

    Irritable enough to drive away—no.

Julia shook the thought from her head, putting her key into the slot and…

She paused. The door was not locked. It wasn’t even completely shut, which she realized when she tried sticking the key in and ended up pushing the door open instead.

    What the hell?

Julia stepped back, ignoring the tightness in her leg and checking the number on the cabin, then on her key.

    This was the right cabin.

She pushed the door further open, peering inside.

Maybe the cleaning staff hadn’t shut the door all the way?

    Nope.

When she was inside, the first thing she spotted in her nice, expensive space, was a man’s shoes, sitting by the door on the welcome mat.

Glancing in further, she saw a navy suitcase standing at the foot of the lone, neatly made queen bed.

    Someone was here.

A simple mistake, sure. Julia sighed, not looking forward to the walk back to the main building to get a card to the correct room, and then she froze in place.

That scent… it was so familiar. It almost
