Adriel Jacques Chevalier descended from a French family that migrated to the Netherlands before immigrating to the United States. His family's vocation centered around the jewelry and watchmaking business for generations. However, Adriel was never adept with handling the delicate parts of tiny machinery. CHAPTER ONE

Pain of Death

DYING ISN’T SUCH a grim prospect if you are suffering inescapable pain without hope of release. In fact, for those who do not end their own lives under such circumstances, it is a most hopeful and welcomed event. However, when you have most of your life to look forward to with several anticipated prospects that are exciting, death can be a most dreaded outcome of circumstances, some of which may be avoidable for a time. Nonetheless, death happens to people of all ages. Regardless of the circumstances, the end result is that we are dead. It’s plain and simple, and there’s no turning back. I am obviously not talking about those who were pronounced dead by a physician only to continue breathing within the hour. As much as some would like to believe that they had returned from death, they in fact did not, nor could they if they were truly dead. It’s this unequivocal state of non-life that I am describing. There are a myriad ways of arriving at death’s door, but the result is basically the same.

There are nuances to the transition, however. We have heard the accounts of those languishing on their death beds who see others in the room who have passed on before. No one but they can perceive the presence of the dead souls who seem to have appeared to usher the loved one into the next realm. That’s a stark difference from someone who was struck by lightning or a speeding vehicle that can cause an unexpected death in an instant. To transition from life to death without expectation can be quite confusing. Usually, there is a brief pseudo sleep sequence in those circumstances when a person finally becomes aware that he is no longer inhabiting his body on earth.

Many of us have expectations about death. Depending on our religious background and belief systems, we often expect a soul to be in Heaven or Hell. However, for those who have experienced a brief death-like encounter they have a different story to tell. Our belief systems do not dictate the actual experience of death, and many are surprised how peaceful it seems to be. Again, these are folks who came near death but never crossed the threshold of no return.

The body, especially the brain, does not want to die. Under normal circumstances, we are resistant to death due to self preservation and the determination to continue living. The final stages of death can be very disturbing under these circumstances as one desperately tries to cling to life when death is inevitable. A feeling of fear and panic can ensue that causes an unpleasant transition. The clanging sound in the ears isn’t pleasant either. We often can see our entire life played back in great detail in a matter of seconds. Again, whether we go kicking and screaming or embracing death like an old friend, the ultimate result is the same. Suffice it to say that dying can be alarming, but death is peaceful.

The fear of death is a substantial entity, and some employ it to coerce others to do or not do certain things. The death penalty is one example, and armed robbery is another. Not only do such people threaten us, they threaten loved ones, as in the case of kidnappers. No matter how it is employed, it is a common fear among us, and none of us in our right minds wants to die. A somewhat amusing experience awaits because once we detach from our brains, we have an entirely different perspective of death. You see, it’s the brain that has such a difficult time with ceasing to exist. However, we as immortal souls live on.

Many of us are in denial over our own death. We see it more objectively than subjectively. For instance, there was a brief time in my life when I sold life insurance. Parenthetically, it’s a misnomer because it’s really death insurance, but no one would buy it if we named it as such. Whenever I presented policy provisions to customers, I would often hear the question, So, when I die, I get the hundred-thousand? Invariably, I would smile and explain, No, you will be dead, and your beneficiary will get the face amount of the policy. Again, one of the first reactions to a cancer diagnosis is denial. We just cannot accept that we are going to die, even though in our logical thoughts we know it’s inevitable.

Staving off death can cause a variety of activities including regular exercise, medication compliance, healthy diets, safety practices, and just plain common sense. The real question looms in our minds whether these practices are really effective. I hate to fly in airplanes. It’s more than the possibility of a crash. It’s the irregular motion, air pressure that affects my sinuses, claustrophobic conditions, proximity of strangers, security measures, and the annoyance of leaving home. In years past, whenever I expressed my reluctance to fly, I couldn’t count the times that someone said, Well, when it’s your time to go, it’s your time to go. If that’s true, then why would we consider looking both ways before crossing the street? The more amusing thing to me is that they might be right, and all of these activities that take so much time, energy, and money to cheat death may really do nothing at all to prevent it. Then again, we have statistics that we like to believe about healthy lifestyles. Nevertheless, most of us are engaged in life preserving activities, even if we are told by someone else that it is inevitable.

So, let’s face it, whether we are rich or poor, famous or unknown, philanthropists or swindlers, young or elderly, beautiful or ugly, religious or atheist, kind or mean, happy or sad, healthy or sick, male or female, regardless of sexuality, we are all destined to walk the same path out of this world by one means or another at a future, unknown time. However, dwelling on our demise isn’t necessarily healthy, especially if it disrupts our peace of mind. There is a difference between contemplating death and contemplating our demise, however. The act of dying is a one point in time action that is irrevocable. Death, on the other hand, is a continuing existence beyond the realm of this earthly plane, which is the focus of this book.

Then comes the question, Can we contact someone beyond the grave? The short answer is, Yes, however, it is ill-advised. Many religious sects shun such activities and vehemently warn against those practices, mostly either due to writings that they hold dear, or the horror that they have learned from others who have successfully done so. This opens another can of worms about the spirit world. Some claim that those who try to contact the dead are met by demons that demon-strate or mimic the deceased. In reality, there’s no way to really know. Even if the so-called deceased can answer questions that no one else has knowledge, it isn’t proof that we aren’t being duped by a spiritual entity. There is a biblical account of the witch at Endor conjuring up the prophet Samuel for King Saul in 1 Samuel 28. If this account is factual, then it is obvious that practices existed long ago for contacting the deceased. My sincere admonition is not to do it, and once you enter the realm of the dead, one of the last things you will want is to be disturbed by those on earth who want to contact you. A feeble example would be if you just sat down into your fifty-yard line seat at the Super Bowl right before the game started, and you got called into work immediately at the hospital due to a disaster.

We now arrive at the juncture to explain hauntings. I personally grew up in a haunted house. From the time I was six until I left home in my late teens, the spirit that could be heard wandering my house at any time of day, even when I was alone, continued regularly. I never saw a material entity, but then again, I steered clear of the footsteps that traversed the stairs and floors of my home. At first, I thought we had an intruder, but time proved differently. Many of us have heard the explanations about souls who got lost and couldn’t find their way to their final resting place. However, that premise is a terrible oversight. When you die, you won’t get stuck somewhere in a house, graveyard, library, mansion, hospital, prison, or any other location on this earth.

You may not be aware of your own composition, but you are a triune entity existing of a body, soul, and spirit. We have already discussed the division of the body and the soul. The body desperately wants to live because it ceases to exist in living form after we depart. Obviously, it is our soul who departs our body when we expire from this earth. However, what about our spirit? Describing our spirit has limitations with our language system and our inability to comprehend anything beyond the three dimensions in which we live. Nonetheless, I shall make a feeble attempt to explain.

When you hear the sound of a clap, you are experiencing the result of an action. Sound waves transfer the action to an audible stimulus that you can detect with your ears, if they are working properly. Your soul produces actions that resonate via your spirit. Your body produces a shadow in the sunshine. It is the result of your presence that effects the environment. You exist as a unique wave length. When you place food in a microwave to heat it, the waves produce the result of heat. Your spirit has been the result of your soul upon this earth in a very unique fashion. I apologize for the limited tools that I have to describe your spirit, but spirits haunt places, not souls.

Now that we have established that we are a unique wave length, and our spirits are the result of the actions of our souls, we must disclose that those human spirits that haunt this earth are very limited in their activities. They cannot kill you. They cannot control you. However, under certain circumstances depending on their intensity they can move objects. Human emotion is a powerful entity, and our spirits are affected by our emotions. When extreme emotion has been involved in the demise of a human, the spirit that remains can create some minor physical manifestations that can be alarming and somewhat amusing. Just as an earthquake or volcano under the ocean can cause a tsunami, so can human spirits transfer emotional vibrations in a much subtler fashion. Do not be afraid of a human spirit haunting. They aren’t dangerous. I know what you’re thinking, and we’ll get to that.

It’s now time to address the aspects of spirits outside the realm of our earthly plane. These are not
