About this ebook

Who was "the Eggman"? Why wasn’t Paul McCartney at the Cavern Club for his first time? What song did the Beatles give to the Rolling Stones? 1000 quizzes about the Beatles' life, both personal and artistic. Family, loves, beatlemania, discografia, songs and much more. From easier questions to more particular ones. A game for the thousands of people who still love them today.
The quizzes are divided into chapters, so everyone can engage with the topics that are most suitable and skip those that interest less or not at all. As in any game, the first "level" is that of beginners, then gradually the most difficult questions, accompanied by the hand along eight years of career that seem eighty, between small and large masterpieces, the result of their absolute genius.
Dedicated especially to all those to whom the Beatles have changed their lives, millions around the world still today, without claiming to teach something, at most defying the memory of the most competent, or arouse some curiosity in those who know them less.
The book is enriched by a contribution from Julia Baird, sister of John Lennon, and a presentation by Ernesto Assante.
The proceeds from the sales will be entirely donated to Strawberry Field, to help young people with learning difficulties: www.strawberryfieldliverpool.com

    STRAWBERRY FIELD

    by Julia Baird

"Strawberry Fields is anywhere you want to go"

    JOHN LENNON

Hello Annamaria and readers of this enterprising Beatles Quiz Book. My name is Julia Baird and I am the Honorary President of the new-ly re-opened Strawberry Field in Liverpool.

I am also John Lennon’s sister.

I met Annamaria in Liverpool two years ago. It was Beatle Week and we met, sitting in the sunshine, listening to Beatle bands. A wonderful way to spend time. We exchanged contact details and stayed in touch. I was then invited to take part in an Arts event in Rome, scheduled to take place in March 2020. This was a Covid postponement, but we hope to enact this event as soon as these events are happening again.

Annamaria has now written this book and has asked me to explain, brielfy, what Strawberry Field is set up to achieve. I am very happy to do this. I would like to start by referring directly to the Steps to Work programme, which is the whole focus of the Strawberry Field Project. Everything that happens here is designed to support the Steps to Work. The Steps to Work programme reaches out to young adults aged 18-25 with learning difficulties or other barriers to employment.

Strawberry Field was actually the name of the Victorian house, which was gifted to The Salvation Army in 1934. Two years later, it was opened as a children’s home for girls first, then boys. It was a refuge for some of the most vulnerable children in Liverpool, affording them safety.

My brother lived nearby in Mendips and it became a safe space for him too. We all know the song, Strawberry Fields Forever and how much that garden meant to John.

Now it gives that same security and safety to the existing students, as a launching pad for life outside. Students are welcome back any time. It will be their forever home from home. More than 60 tRainees have been through the programme now, despite the stop start restrictions. I meet them often, in the cafe, in the gardens, exchanging their new experiences.

The tRaining programme is supported by a fabulous cafe, with some students helping out with the cooking. There is a shop, with former students helping to organise merchandising. The gardens are beautiful, including beds of strawberry plants and a meditation garden, with the original famous Red Gates. Students can undertake teaching sessions to be tour guides for the garden visitors, if they choose.

Last, but by no means least, we have the Strawberry Field Exhibition Centre. Paul McCartney is the first image you see, as he talks of his memories of John and the building.

Then you almost walk right up to a piano. A very special piano. The one where John both composed and recorded, Imagine. It was bought by George Michael and he wrote, Patience on it. His estate has very kindly loaned this vital piece of musical history to the Strawberry Field Exhibition.

There is also a working mellotron, where you can try out your maestro skills.

I do hope that you will be able to visit Strawberry Field one day. In the meantime, please have a look at www.strawberryfieldliverpool.com and www.juliabaird.co.uk, Strawberry Field blog, the history up until now, with stories and photos.

I wish Annamaria the very best with this quiz book. I cannot read speak Italian, but recognise some words from Latin. I don’t think I would get very far with these questions!

    With love to you all

    Julia

    MY GENERATION

    by Ernesto Assante*

There’s nothing you can do that can’t be done

    THE BEATLES

And one fine day I asked myself: but do I, really, know everything about The Beatles? Obviously not. And a definitive bang to my convictions has given this accurate work of Beatlesiana reconnaissance of Annamaria De Caroli. Many things that I did not know, or that I did not remember or that in the hurry haste of having to answer have passed my mind. Too many, in fact. No, it is not true, I knew enough, almost all of them, I am not so unprepared in the end, I can even say I’m satisfied, at the final exam I would say that I have been promoted by myself.

It’s a game, then, a quiz in theory, with lots of questions to be answered.

But it is not a game and not even really a quiz: it is rather a book of Beatlesian history, in which to immerse and get lost happily. It is a game book because at each quiz, at each question, every right or wrong answer, corresponds to a story to deepen, a record to listen to again, a song to send back to memory. And this means being able to play all the time, over and over again, because the game never ends, especially for those who, like me, is a long-time militant Beatlesian.

After all, without The Beatles and their songs, let’s be clear, it would be useless to live. The world would lose many of the colors that have transformed it for the better, life would not have the same surprising taste, art would be decidedly less interesting and music… well, calculating at least seventy percent of the songs that are written every day in the world owe something to Lennon, McCartney, Harrison and Starr’s lesson, we would have little to listen to, and in any case certainly everything would be more boring. This game demonstrates this, with its endless references, its curiosities, its surprises, through questions that gradually become more and more exciting and allow to travel in time and space.

It is a game for those who love music, all of it, in fact, because from The Beatles we start to discover much more than just their songs (which however, added obviously to those of the solo discs of each of the Fabulous Four, makes a sufficient number to cover an entire life), other music, other books, other movies that serve to compose the magnificent kaleidoscope of contemporary popular culture.

In the end, however, I must make a confession: Annamaria De Caroli knows more about The Beatles than I do.

    INTRODUCTION

Life is what happens to you while you’ re busy making other plans

JOHN LENNON - Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy)

Not being able to be a groupie at the right age, with the passing of the years I made up for it in a big way.

Like all the girls of the time, I knew little about the real life of The Beatles, I only knew their songs and the instinctive and inexplicable happiness that I felt when I listened to them and sang them (often in an improbable and clumsy English). That’s why in all these years I’ve read hundreds of books, watched thousands of photos and videos, watched their movies repeatedly. Never a moment of boredom. On the contrary, each time the satisfaction of discovering a detail unknown until that moment.

I must somehow thank this terrible period of pandemic, which has given me more time to devote to my one, true passion: The Beatles. Hours and hours completely immersed in their world, as I had never had the opportunity to do. As if I had been teleported back to the ’60s. Hence the idea of this book, the fun of a differently young fan who just wants to play with the thousands of people who still love them, like her. Nothing more. I am not a music critic, nor a musician.

I do not want to teach anything to anyone, at most challenge your memory or arouse some curiosity.

The quizzes are divided into chapters, so everyone can try their hand at the topics that are most congenial to them and skip those that interest them less or not at all.

If you buy this book, you will also have supported Strawberry Field (https://www.strawberryfieldliverpool.com), the old orphanage redeveloped by the Salvation Army to help young people with learning disabilities fit into society. All proceeds, little or much, will go to them.

And now… Peace and Love and have fun!
