About this ebook

Clearing My Desk is a collection of five sermons/experiences delivered through the years to congregations in various locations. I do not know if I have ever had an original thought; therefore, I claim no originality. I agree with my friend Hinkle Little, who said, "I have never had an original thought, it was God's, and He just gave it away."

"The Life and Death of a Little Giant" is a remembrance of my precious granddaughter who died at age four.

"Vexed" looks at the life experiences of Lot in Sodom and how the Christian community today is likewise vexed.

In "Three Questions," using Paul's prayer in Romans 1:9-17, we ask ourselves if we are willing for God to answer our prayers in His way. Are we willing for God to answer our prayers in His time? Are we willing for God to answer our prayers for His purpose?

"What If?" examines how Christians often limit the blessings of God by expecting Him to work in the same manner as our past experiences have shown. Should we not let go and let God?

"Twenty-Seven Days" reviews my experience with a young lady with only twenty-seven days to live.

    About the Author

    Dedication

Idedicate this book to Deborah Sue Varney, our granddaughter we had for a little while. She suffered much but brought much joy to our lives.

Also, to my wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren who bring much joy and comfort to my life.

A special thanks to Nancy Goodwin Upchurch for all her hard work in typing, proofing, and patience in producing the manuscript.

    Foreword

I'm very honored that my friend, Rev. Edwin Moore, would ask me to write a foreword for his new book. I certainly have nothing but gratitude for his life, his ministry and his writings. The reader will discover this dear man's God-consciousness and the out-working of that consciousness in his life.

His Consciousness of Sorrow—Having faced many sorrows in his own life and family, Brother Edwin has a heart for those who are hurting. He knows the Man of sorrows (Isa. 53:3), the Lord Jesus, and is able to communicate that knowledge as he relates to others and their sorrows.

His Consciousness of Sin—As a man of God, he cannot help but remind us of the holiness of God, and our need to turn from our selfish ways to Him. Aware that …all have sinned and come short of the glory of God (Rom. 3:23), he confronts all of us with our sins and our need of repentance.

His Consciousness of Sanctification—It is clear that the desire of the author is for the best of God's people. He has the God-given ability to zero in on our failures and the need to properly respond to truth. His honesty and searching questions encourage us to examine our hearts and further us in our daily walk with God.

May the Lord use this book to help each of us in a life of God-consciousness and a manifested consciousness in these areas.

The Life and Death of a Little Giant

From the first breath, it seemed that our little granddaughter was set for a fall. Our daughter had an extremely difficult delivery, and the baby seemed to have much difficulty shortly after delivery. But the joy of the new life and excitement that newborns bring caused us to put out of our minds the thoughts of disease and difficulty. But after a few months of watching our little Deborah not gain weight nor develop as she should, we knew things were not well. Our daughter, Tammy, took her to a doctor who then placed her in a hospital. We had no idea at that time that little Deborah would spend most of her life in the hospital, but as the Lord would have it, that was her lot in life. The problem was a rare form of brain tumor which was wrapped around the pituitary gland, optic nerve, and was in the center of the brain. After much treatment, operations, and general suffering, she went to be with our Lord, where there is no suffering or pain. The experiences, high and low points could not be contained in a book. The bravery of Tammy and James, Deborah's parents, was outstanding. Tonia and Kelly, Deborah's aunt and uncle, and many others were real pillars of support for those who had to deal daily with the reality that Deborah would not survive in this world. She was planted here to bloom in eternity.

The following is what I said at her funeral:

    The Negro Preacher

The little chapel was quiet except for the sobbing of the parents and friends. In front sat a little white casket, with the body of a beautiful little black girl. On the front pew sat the parents sobbing with heads bowed. The old black minister arose at the pulpit. With the dignity and reverence of the moment, he said, "Now this beautiful little form that lies before you is an angel of the Lord. He did not give you this baby, not in a hundred million years. He only loaned her to you as a ray of sunshine to brighten your life for a little while so you
