    God Is in Control

    When you look at the life of Elijah, the prophet of God, you will ask yourself, what was it about this man that made him so great, yet so weak? Elijah, a man of God, shows up at a time when Israel is dealing with idolatry and worshiping two pagan gods, Baal and Asheroth. These two gods symbolize fertility and prosperity, two ideals that the people of Israel desired.

    At the time, Israel is led by King Ahab of the northern nation of Israel, which is divided into two kingdoms that make up one nation, the northern and the southern kingdoms. King Ahab must be strong in himself and in the word in order to be a good ruler how wrong we would be.

    I know we all experience individuals in our lives who try to manipulate us by controlling our thoughts, actions, and behavior. Have no fear. God is in control.

    To punish the Israelites, the Lord bestows a famine upon the land, which causes greater problems for Israel. This famine is both spiritual and physical—for you cannot call Jesus, Lord, and worship false gods. False gods are people, possessions, and even your job. Remember, God is a jealous God and we are to serve none other.

    It's easy to allow gods to form your life, but recognize the Lord is in control. For instance, in 1 Kings 17:1, God tells the prophet Elijah that he is going to send a famine on
