Have You Ever Wondered About...? - Gary Downton

    Chapter 1

    Preface

As I continued this book, I felt that God the Holy Spirit was instructing me to write about some common things around us and also questions you may have had at some point in the past. Maybe you can become more curious about some of the variety of topics covered and write more on them yourself. To show you what I base my daily activities on, I have also included the tenets of faith and the gifts of the Holy Spirit available to us. There is no place in the Bible where I can find that these gifts were only for the first-century church and that they have been taken away. That means those gifts are 100 percent in full effect in this day and age. Those gifts have been misused considerably to the extent that many individuals are leery of them. But if used correctly, they work positively and consistently all the time.

There are readers of my two books who are to expound on some of the information and ideas written herein. It was my task, per guidance of the Holy Spirit, to initiate ideas for other people to write about. Some of you are to go into more detail about what happened in the far past and other subjects concerning the future existence. Please be open to the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and He will guide you through the maze of positive suggestions and materials that will come into your perimeter. Ask God to show you how to delete negative facts and assemble positive material in the proper form and sequence of those subjects you are to expound upon.

There are many subjects I could write more on, but God wants you to step out in faith and test the various skills He has entrusted you with. One of the subjects, for example, is that you could write a book or a college paper on more details about the angelic civilization that lived on the earth around three hundred million years ago.

Pastors, pay attention! The ponder points in this book and the previous book have been designed by the Holy Spirit both for enjoyment and at least one sermon. As to some of the ponder points, you may think, how can I get a sermon out of that statement? I’ll give you an example and its origin, and then you can go from there. The statement is this: Squirrels can do funny things. This is how that statement started.

I was fishing in a Montana mountain stream. I spotted another small valley just downstream and off to the left about one hundred yards away. I had to cross the stream in order to get to the other stream. I spotted a log that had fallen across the stream. There was a Rocky Mountains black squirrel crossing the log, and he had a spruce cone in his mouth. Apparently, he had never seen a human before. I was probably about thirty feet from him.

He spotted me and became wide-eyed, to say the least. He was up on the log about midstream, opened his mouth, and subsequently dropped the spruce cone in the fast-moving water. He didn’t want to jump into the water to retrieve the cone, so a combination of mild anger and frustration set in. He looked at me and probably said mean and nasty things in squirrel lingo. I don’t think he knows how to shake his fist at me, so he nervously turned around and around on the log in a rather agitated fashion, then probably became disgusted and promptly left. Now, pastors, you can see the materials needed for several sermons from how squirrels can do funny things.

There are other readers who are to be part of the fivefold ministry (Ephesians 4:11), and the Holy Spirit wants to obtain their attention. One day in my past, the pastor in charge at that time gave the invitation for people who thought they might be called to some type of ministry to come up front. Seven of us went up, one lady and six men. We had oil literally poured on our heads and dripping on the floor. Since that incident, many positive and negative things have happened in my life, but I have kept making an effort to somehow go forward in life. The Holy Spirit never left me alone and prompted me to continue. How about you? What is He indicating to you in order to promote God’s Word in many lives? What talents do you have, and are you using them to promote His Word? And remember, ministers don't retire. Ministers continue to help others, read forward, and think more of common things and occurrences around them. For an odd question, have you ever built a rock wall?

Don’t get mad enough that you enlarge your children’s vocabulary too far beyond their years

    Chapter 2

    Lumen

Which colors do you personally prefer over other colors on their respective pages? How do you know they are colors? Why do you know they are colors?

We go back to God again and the two beginnings that were both the original beginning and the second beginning. And God said, let there be light, and there was light, and God saw that the light was good [suitable, pleasant] and he approved it; And God separated the light from the darkness (Genesis 1:34). Lumen is the Latin word for light, eye, and opening. You can see the word lumen on many light bulb packages.

This light that God made, how does it exist and work?

Visible light that God created is a form of radiant energy of a specific range of wavelength in the electromagnetic scale of energy. How’s that for a technical thought? Visible light, to us, only comprises a small band of energy in the totality of light forms. Other rays are ultraviolet, gamma, X-rays, cosmic rays, short and long band radio waves, and others.

As for ultraviolet rays, we can feel them on a sunny day but can’t see them with our normal eyes. Sunburn is a result of too much exposure to these rays. In a concentrated form, we can view them emanating from indoor plant lights, such as the lights used over African violets. The light waves are a result of many vibrations of electrons per second.

All light travels at the same rate of speed. Shorter light waves vibrate more so in a particular time frame than longer waves. White light is a combination of all colors. Black is an absence of color. When light is run through a prism, red results from longer wavelengths and violet /blue from some of the shortest wavelengths. Every other color is somewhere in-between wavelengths of these two colors. (Forrester)

Color is not something that exists in an object but rather a sensation produced in the brain by light sent out from an object to the eyes. A green object is one that absorbs all light falling on it except green, likewise with red, yellow, and so forth. Visible light from anything—like the sun, other stellar objects, or a flashlight—is visible to us as a result of God creating all functions needed to analyze that light. He gave us vision. We have all the functions in the eye and brain that were instantly created by God. He made the lens, cornea, optical fluid, retina, optic nerves, and cranial functions to analyze incoming images. Those images come in upside down, and the brain reverses that.

Just the retina has about 137 million light sensitive cells. About ninety five percent of these cells recognize black and white images [rods] and about five percent recognize various color images [cones]. Do you dream in color? Colored object owe their color to the fact that they absorb from white light certain wavelengths, and reflect or rediffuse others; the latter producing a color sensation in our brain. (Frank Forrester)

We are familiar with the rainbow, which results from the refraction and reflection of sunlight by water droplets. Sometimes we see two rainbows at the same time and notice two things, One is that the inner rainbow is brighter. Two is that the outer rainbow has reversed color patterns. The radius of the brighter one is 42 degrees and the radius of the dimmer one is 51 degrees. The brighter rainbow is caused by two refractions and one reflection while the second rainbow has an extra internal reflection causing it to be dimmer (Forrester).

The rainbow is spoken of in chapter 9 of Genesis as a sign God gave mankind signifying He would not destroy the surface of the earth with water anymore. When the angelic civilization was on the earth several hundred million years ago, there wasn’t any rain except small amounts high up in the atmosphere in the first vapor canopy. Genesis 2:5 states that the Lord God had not yet caused it to rain upon the earth. This scripture extends back to the formation of our planet. This no-rain scenario continued after God refurbished the earth as a result of Satan’s initial judgment in Isaiah 14:17. The second vapor canopy (Genesis 1:6) lasted until the flood of Noah’s time and the resulting initiation of rainfall.

In Genesis 2:5–6, God says that a mist (fog) came up from the ground to water the earth. The whole planet was an average of about 74°F at that time. The rainbow I want to see is mentioned as a full circle of solid green (emerald) bow encircling the throne in New Jerusalem, the third heaven. And He who sat there appeared like [the crystalline brightness of] Jasper and [the fiery] sardius, and encircling the throne there was a halo that looked like [a rainbow of] emerald (Revelation 4:3).

A person can see a rainbow even in a lawn/garden sprinkler if they are standing in the correct position. Sometimes, as a passenger in a jet, a person can see a rainbow that is a complete circle.

Blue tones have some of the shortest of light waves. The blue color of the sky fades in intensity as a person travels up through the atmosphere until that person reaches the vacuum and blackness of interstellar space. Astronauts see this phenomenon as they go back and forth to the present space station and also as they encircle the earth. The atmosphere thins out as a person goes upward from this planet, so there are less and progressively less molecules of air with ascension.

The small pieces of matter and air in the sky intercept and scatter a larger portion of the blue color than any other color. This selective scattering causes the blue of the firmament (sky). The picture following was taken out of Creation Magazine (Fall 2007, vol. 14, no. 3, p. 24).

This is our planet, and the blackness is interstellar space. Notice how the atmosphere fades with increased distance from earth’s surface and how thin our blanket of air actually is. You can see the curvature of earth and some cloud cover also in the photograph. Notice that those particular clouds only go up so far, and they, too, have a general curvature like our home planet. There are more planets like ours in this universe than you could possibly think to count. The atmospheric qualities will be discussed later. God continually shows us He is the God of infinite variety in all the differing variations in the spectrum of His creation. We see clear skies, cloudy skies, different coloration in rocks and dirt, flowers, animals, and other varieties of animate and inanimate things all around us.

Remembering back to antiquity, when I was about eight or nine years old, my parents had a maple tree in their backyard. Toward the top of the tree, there was a place where the limbs provided a place to sit. One of the branches had a forked limb where my head could rest. I would climb up the tree and sit in that area. I did not fall asleep or fall to the ground. I would watch the surrounding hills in Western Maryland and observe different cloud formations and different images in those clouds. I would watch storms and didn’t even think about lightning striking the tree. That tree is still there sixty-five years later, and so am I at this writing.

What do you notice about coloration in God’s creation? What can you notice about His creation that either you never noticed before or forgot to stop in your busy schedule and observe? One example is the sunrise. Another are the various sunsets. Have you ever looked at a snowflake with a magnifying glass? We now go to the next section.

Give God what’s right, not what’s left.

    Chapter 3

    Clyppan

There is a phenomenon on the face of this planet, and it has existed, for the most part, only about six thousand years. In my previous book What Was, What Is, What Is to Come, there was mentioned two vapor canopies that existed in the past geologic history of this planet. In God’s expanding design for this planet, we see the first vapor canopy existing from around 444 million years BC to about 251 million years BC or for about 190 million years. That vapor canopy was, as previously mentioned, deleted with God’s initial judgment of Lucifer and his demons going against God. Then there was the 10-million-year gap between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2 before God started His second beginning and a new vapor canopy (Genesis 1:6). Remember that these vapor canopies provided protection for the planet’s optimum living conditions and a worldwide average temperature of 74°F.

These canopies extended to about an average of 32 miles (170,000 feet) above earth’s surface. The second canopy was deleted in the flood of Noah’s time "in the year six hundred of Noah’s life; in the
