Cookie Jar Devotions - Marti Greenwalt Roberts

    The Cookie Jar

    Proverbs 31:30–31

    Proverbs 23:1–3

Every summer, my parents would pack up the ’56 station wagon and head for Oklahoma to see my grandparents. Dad was the pastor of a church in California, so we always left at night to escape the desert heat in Arizona. After traveling for two days, our grandparents’ country home was a welcome sight! As soon as we turned into the gravel driveway, we could smell those lemon sugar cookies!

My brothers and I would scramble out of the car, into my grandparents’ arms. Then we ran into the kitchen to look inside the faded red jar on the kitchen countertop. Those lemon sugar cookies were so good!

Prayer: Lord, help me to remember what is most important, and to focus on my heart. Help me not to judge others by what they look like, but to look at them through your eyes. Make me an acceptable messenger of your love.

After several games had been played, cookies and punch were served to enjoy while the gifts were being opened. At this time, the hostess made an announcement. She had run out of sugar (possibly a cup) while in the process of mixing the cookies but had decided to bake them anyway. The guests smiled politely and choked down a few bites. Obviously, the hostess had not prepared adequately for the baby shower.

Preparation is important, whether it be in baking cookies or
