Although we think we do, nobody does life all by themselves. It really is a team activity. There should always be

    Foreword

    Question:

What is the spirit of a champion? What does it take to really develop that spirit?

A true champion wins with a balanced life. This includes developing your spiritual nature as well as your physical and intellectual nature. A champion is always prepared for what it takes to win and must exude confidence and faith in oneself and in spirit and must overcome obstacles and setbacks to get to the desired goal.

A champion wins with a joyful and a thankful attitude and accepts victory with grace.

That joyful attitude is reflected by the Reverend Bob Gray. His joy for Jesus and his strong faith are contagious. Reverend Gray has persevered through personal tragedy and the rigors and stress of being a probation officer and has found comfort and direction in ministering to so many others while spreading words of comfort, joy and faith.

Those of us with the Red Sox have been privileged to witness Reverend Gray sharing his faith with us at Baseball Chapel. I have been involved with many champions both on and off the playing fields, and I am certain that Reverend Gray is a true champion in so many ways.

    *****

Reverend Bob Gray asked me the following: What is the spirit of a champion? Can it be taught? Is it innate? How do you know if you possess it? Well, having had the opportunity to be a member of three NFL championship teams, I can tell you with absolute certainty that we all poses a spirit of either a champion or a loser and, at times, a combination of both. When the circumstances of life present themselves, they will reveal not conceal who you really are and which characteristics you choose to express!

If you are willing to give your time, resources, effort, energy, heart, and soul for the benefit of others, then you have expressed the spirit of a champion! If it is all about you, your glory, your pleasure, and even your pain, then you have not expressed the spirit of a champion. Sadly, most people pursue self-interest in which the end result is a mediocre existence. The good news is that despite our shortcomings and failures, we all have the ability to overcome mediocrity and daily express the spirit of a champion!
