If any honor existed in war, it was in fighting to protect others from harm.

Chapter 1
What Dreams May Come
Another idiot has decided now would be a good time to talk with his friend in the parking lot, most definitely about something mundane that could wait. Sadly, doing this has blocked me from a parking spot that would keep me within safe walking distance to my first class of the day. Does he not know that it is pouring cats and dogs? Actually, that would be adorable. Well, the dog part. I slightly lay on my horn which produces a lovely hand gesture in return. You would think that congregating in the rain around someone’s car would be unpleasant. But, apparently, this place is used to the rain. Mom wanted something new after I graduated high school in Tyler, Texas. Fine by me. That place was a sinkhole of crazy. Apparently, when she was offered the job of dispatch for Collin County Police Department in Plano, Texas, they didn’t receive the memo on no crazy allowed . Hence the idiots standing around a car in a thunderstorm.
I get to go to a community college instead of traveling the world. How could I say no when it has just been Mom and I for years? Plus, I am pretty sure she wants me to make something of myself. Of what, who knows? Dad passed away when I was thirteen. He tried to stop the guy at the 7-Eleven from shooting up the place. He had worked with the police department for years, and yet his gun failed to release one time and he is gone. I see him in my gray eyes and simple smile. Probably the only reason I like them. My hair I get from my mother. The hair hates me, and the feeling is mutual. I want it to curl, it goes straight, and vice versa. The dark locks on my head like the rain and would love nothing better than to stand on end in some kind of sick symbol of appreciation. That is why a hat is needed for rainy days. A flash pulls me from my mirror. For a second, I think these idiots have started taking pictures in the rain. Then I hear and feel the inevitable thunder that follows. At least, they are moving their asses now. I get my spot as soon as the rain really gets bad. I can just hear Dad laughing, telling me to just run. Yeah, I think with my naturally ability to hit the ground without assistance is a sign that I should just show up soaked to class. I grab everything I believe I need, swing the door open, and get ready to sloth it up in the rain. Of course, I slip almost immediately and watch one of my books start to float away in the sudden river created by the hurricane. With the other book pressed to my chest, I yell every word I could think of as I am falling to the ground.
Do you kiss your mother with that mouth?
Oh god, I hit my head. The book is talking.
Seriously, are you okay?
I look up to see that the Greek god Hercules is holding my soaked butt up inches from the ground with a grin that is obviously a fight of him not laughing. I can already tell he is over six feet tall with muscles—not the gross over the top kind but enough to demand respect. He has sandy blond hair and blue eyes. I actually prefer darker hair, but on him it fits.
I am just fine. Could you please release me?
He looks at me for just a moment before smiling this gorgeous but terrifying grin and lets me finish my descent to the ground.
Why, John, I am surprised you would let something so beautiful fall from your grasp.
Crap, there are more of them. I see five other people staring down at me with umbrellas above their heads. I actually think I am envious of the umbrellas until he moves one over me.
Hey, darling, I’m Jason. Sorry, John here does not know what to do with beautiful women.
I kind of like that the Hercules guy John looks pissed at the comment, but instead of saying anything, I stare. I get a good look at Jason who is the opposite of John with dark hair cut short, brown eyes, and some muscles. I think the real attention-getter is his smile. Pretty sure if he smiled that smile and told me to drown myself in the puddle, I would do it. I hear the clearing of a throat to find a model reaching down to help me up. I’m Harper, we can introduce the rest of the crew once we get you out of the swimming hole you fell in. Why don’t we go inside?
Harper carefully helps me to my feet while telling the imbecile guys that it’s their job to help a lady up. She smiles at me while telling John and Jason to grab my stuff. We start walking to the front of the campus. I see her only from a side profile but instantly realize I look like a plain Jane next to her. She has a petite look but muscles to prove she could defend herself, strong bone structure, green eyes, and dark hair. In other words, she looked like a model that stepped out of a magazine. We make it inside as the rain lets up some. Just my luck.
The halls are thankfully pretty empty, except for myself and the five photoshopped people come to life. A guy around 5'6 with jet-black hair and sky blue eyes gives me his jacket and smiles politely.
I’m Grayson. I should have helped but was astonished by my friends standing there and yet I did the same, so I apologize." I immediately like him. It’s pretty rare for a guy to admit he did something stupid.
John actually looked mad. Hey, I helped her. She wanted me to release her, if you recall.
He stares at me with some weird look on his face which, of course, makes me blush, and with my pale undertones, I look like Rudolph’s damn nose. If the model group notices, they keep quiet.
A red-haired girl walks up to me and basically circles me. Harper has a look of annoyance almost immediately. "Rebecca, could you please not circle the
