Eloise

Writing thrillers isn't for everyone, but creativity is my love language. Sure, being an artist can be lonely at times. For a while, I even thought I'd become a parent, but the life I've carved out for myself is nothing to complain about. When things get hard I pack up my trailer and roll out of town. But when I meet a curious kid with a big heart, he stops me in my tracks. When a handsome lumberjack turns out to be his dad, they rewrite the ending of my story. Garrison is handsome and charming, but could he really be my happy ending?

Daddy Vibes Lumberjack - Elsie James

    PROLOGUE: ELOISE

I can still hear the sound of kids yelling and parents cheering them on in the distance as I reach the start of the path. Trees soar overhead, their branches fanned out over my head in a canopy. You can’t beat the view here, but I thought that parking my trailer in the woods would be more peaceful.

I crunch down the gravel road and with each footstep, I feel the pressure in my chest ease a little. I may have finally found the perfect location to write… at least for now. It’s scenic, two of my three sisters are here, and it’s peaceful.

But as my trailer comes into view, I hesitate. The door to my trailer is open. Why is the door open? That little tin can on wheels isn’t just my trailer, it’s my home, my writing headquarters, and my sanctuary. There’s no way I would have left the door open, especially not with the deranged fans that have surfaced in the wake of my newfound success.

Please don’t be a deranged fan. Please don’t be a fan.

I take a deep breath and charge toward the trailer. If someone is there, I need to know. I don’t need a damn lumberjack to come save the day. Whoever’s in there is going to meet me and my can of pepper spray.

When I rip over the door, I’m stunned into silence. I have to blink twice at the sight before me just to make sure it’s real. There’s a kid. Well, not a kid exactly but a half man, half child person sitting at the small kitchen table. He’s got a backpack sitting beside him and headphones pulled down around his neck.

    What in the world?

He’s holding my leather-bound writing notebooks and casually scratching into one of them with my new fountain pen. I can’t think of a single more offensive thing. Those notebooks cost me a fortune. They were my gift to myself once I made it big and he’s just… doodling. I slam my metal water bottle on the countertop behind him and he jumps with a start.

He looks up at me, eyes wide. Sorry, I’ll take off.

Excuse you! What the hell are you doing in my trailer in the first place?

The boy with the massive eyes looks up at me. He can’t be more than fifteen, maybe sixteen. He’s tall with lanky arms and a crooked smile. He doesn’t look bothered by my outrage and when I pepper him with questions, he gives me a simple shrug.

Well! What do you have to say? Those notebooks aren’t for writing in. I press a hand to my temples in disbelief.

He gets to his feet but his eyebrows furrow in confusion. But it’s a notebook, this is exactly what notebooks are for. The ghost of a smile plays on his mouth as he holds up his sketch. Outrage aside, I have to admit that the art is pretty impressive.

Okay, so you're not wrong. I cross my arms like some kind of crabby librarian and I don’t even recognize myself right now. But it’s a special notebook for a story I haven’t thought of yet. I’ve been saving those and now I… I’m not going to explain this to you. Why aren’t you at lumberjack camp with every other boy in this town?

Ha. I’ve put my time in over the years. Believe it or not, lumberjacking isn’t for everyone. I’m supposed to be a camp counselor this year, but I've been taking walks in the woods instead. Just, please, be cool about this. He holds his hands up and backs down the stairs. "Don’t tell anyone. My dad’s already got a
