When I lost my wife, I lost everything… Except for my little girl, Tilly. Being a single dad isn't something I ever planned on, but I'm making it work. Moving back to my small hometown to take a job at the local library seems like a good place to start.
But when a veterinarian volunteers at our event, she reads me like a book.

But can I convince her that she is enough?

CHAPTER 1
SURI
I pass the Archives Library in the center of our tiny town every day on my way to work at the pet hospital. You can almost sense the magic radiating from the old Victorian. So when the owner, Mr. Lit offered me the chance to come in and read to the kids in the community, I couldn’t say yes fast enough.
We need more strong, female veterinarians, especially in our little old-fashioned town and this is a way for me to do my part to inspire them. Besides, I love kids and since I can’t have any of my own, I’m always on the lookout for ways to give back and get involved.
I step in through the creaking, old, wooden front door with my canvas bag full of books. It looks just the same as I remember. Winding wooden shelves, bright green plants, and cozy sitting areas are carved out at every turn.
Glancing at the clock, I find I’m a bit early. So I let myself get lost in nostalgia as I wander down the aisle in front of the window. A fat gray cat chirps at me from atop the bookcase.
When I try to run my fingers across his fur, he snarls. Well, hello to you too.
I smile, petting him anyway and paying the price when he swipes my hand.
That’s Booksy, you can’t touch behind his ears.
An adorable little girl with sparkling dark eyes appears beside me. Try his side. He’s Mr. Lit’s cat so he gets to stay here all day, even when he’s crabby.
She cups her mouth with her hands and raises her eyebrows. The little girl bounces over to Booksy and runs her hand across his fur.
Wow, how do you two know each other so well? You must come here a lot.
Yeah, I like to read. I’m in first grade but I learned super early because I sometimes get bored at home. And my class is just learning about decoding words.
She bites back a smile. Kind of like they’re babies, right? But don’t tell them that. It’s just because my teacher is only starting them. For reals, I’m already on level two books!
I let out a giggle. Who is this kid? Wow, that’s pretty good. Your parents must really be working with you at home.
I only have a dad, well, and my grandparents too. My mom died before I can remember but I think I look like her now and my dad does love to read. He actually works here. He loves books too.
Oh.
For a moment, I’m taken aback by her forward maturity, but she doesn’t miss a beat. Well, you must have a super dad then.
Yeah,
she shrugs. Her matter-of-fact nature combined with her exceptional vocabulary makes me like her already. Are you the guest reader?
I am. I’m Suri Sampson. I work over at the animal hospital and I’ve got some good books in here I’ll bet you’ve never read.
I pat my canvas bag.
