    My heart pounds in my chest and I take another sip of my beer, desperate to drink away my feelings. In general, I’ve outgrown this kind of behavior, but for tonight I’m making an exception.

    Ladies and gentlemen, Larissa, the wedding planner talks too close to the microphone.

    From where I sit, her full lips seem to practically wrap around the squishy head of the microphone and it’s all I can do to keep my mind out of the gutter. It’s not an easy task when you’ve been single as long as I have.

    She continues, We have a special treat. Brad, the father of the bride is going to make a toast to the happy couple.

    I rub my palms on the top of my pants and someone hands me a microphone. Clearing my throat, I stand up, a flute of wine in hand. Yeah, okay. Well, I’ll start by saying this isn’t my type of thing. And I’m not talking about giving speeches. I’m talking about giving my daughter away. In particular to someone like Toby. Cautious laughter bubbles through the crowd, but I’m not going for funny. I’m too drunk for that.

    My daughter Cressida shoots me a look from behind a too big bouquet of flowers, but I ignore it.

    I continue, The thing is, you two eloped. Without telling me. And I don’t get that. I know we’ve talked about it, but I don’t like it. Toby, you’ve got at least three of you running around here tonight. Are those your brothers?

    Yes sir. Toby stands and gives me a nod.

    Yeah, so there’s a lot of you. But my daughter is all I have and you took her from me without asking. The room falls silent. "It’s fine, it’s the truth. My wife died ten years ago and this is the natural course of things. Daughters become wives. I just wish that didn’t mean I’d end up alone at the end of all this… No, I don’t like this at all. You know what, Toby, I think I might fight you. Yeah, I think I should take
