About this ebook

When Haile Reed is kidnapped one day after school, she's thrown into a world where vampires and human servants exist.

No.

It's actually even worse.

She becomes a human servant, a being who is tied to a vampire master and has to do exactly what that master orders.

Her master is also the one who saved her, the man she met a few months earlier but lost contact with, and her feelings for him… Let's just say they are much stronger than they should be even before the bond was made.

How will Haile handle her new reality? How will she deal with the feelings she has for her master? What will her master do?

The Human Servant - Emma Snow

    Prologue

Plopping another potato chip in my mouth, I flip the page in my biology textbook. It’s a beautiful summer day and this will be my last exam of the school year. After tomorrow I’m officially done. Sighing, I gather my stuff and shove it into my bag as I head for the park’s main entrance. I bump into someone and begin to fall backwards but strong cold hands save me.

Oh, I’m so sorry, I blurt out.

No need, I wasn’t paying attention, a smooth male voice responds.

My eyes travel up to his face and for a moment I can’t breathe. Chiseled jaw, high cheekbones, bright green eyes, and a devastatingly beautiful smile on those thin lips. Trailing down his body, I take note of the police uniform and then shake myself out of whatever trance he put me in.

I wasn’t looking either, officer, I respond and he chuckles.

Please, call me Derek. Are you okay? You didn’t get hurt, right? he asks, scanning me for any injuries.

Not hurt, thank you. I’m Haile, I say and then hesitate, Would you like to get ice cream or something or are you on duty?

It’s a long shot that he’d actually be interested in me but if I don’t try I’ll never know. His smile widens and he reaches for his radio. Saying something unintelligible into it, a female voice responds and he relaxes a bit.

I got an hour off if you’d like to join me for lunch? he suggests, nodding towards a fast-food truck.

I’d love that, I say and he relaxes a bit more, leading me over there.

So what were you doing here? he asks as we stand in line and I shrug.

Studying, I have a biology exam tomorrow so I thought it’d be nice to get some sunlight. Are you working alone?

Yes, I’m alone, he confirms, The sun really is nice today, what is the exam about?

Different stages of mitosis as well as transport through cell membranes, I shrug. We reach the window and state our orders, then Derek absolutely insists he’ll pay- we also get a cop discount from the owner so that’s nice.

Where would you like to sit? he asks and I look around, then lead the way to a lovely oak tree.

Pick-nick? I suggest, pulling my pick-nick blanket out.

Perfect, he assures me. Together we spread it out and then sit down beside each other, leaning against the trunk of the tree.

What do you do besides working? I ask and he chuckles.

I like cars so my brothers and I often work on those. Other than that I like to read and go out on hikes, he explains.

Really? My dad loves his cars. His older car is like his baby and then there’s a newer one mom mostly uses.

    Yeah? Are you into cars?

No, I chuckle, rolling my eyes as I continue, The one time dad managed to get me to help in the garage I somehow managed to trip, hit my head on the side of the car, and pass out. Safe to say I didn’t become more interested after that.

How old were you? His lips twitch.

I was seven and it’s fine, laugh all you want.

Instantly he lets out a deep rich laugh which makes me grin.

If you’re not into cars, what are you interested in? he asks after he’s gathered himself. I shrug slightly.

Painting, singing, watching movies mostly, I say, Oh and I also like reading, mostly fantasy.

    What do you paint?

Nature mostly or sketching people, I tell him.

Wow, I’m horrible at anything involving creativity. My mind goes completely blank with anything to do.

Really? What’s your level? Stick-figures? I smirk and he rolls his eyes.

Yes, but barely that, he admits and I pull out my notebook. Oh no, he groans which makes me laugh.

We set off with him trying to sketch something and me guessing what it is as we tease and get to know each other.

In the end, he walks me to my car and bids me goodbye. He heads back to his police car and I don’t even realize that we forgot to exchange any kind of contact information until it’s too late. Maybe he’ll find me anyway?

    Chapter One

Acold hand grabs my arm roughly.

Be silent and do as I say. I don’t want to hurt you, darling.

The tone makes my body lock up, my heart racing as I glance down and spot the gun shoved against my waist. Oh no, what do I do now? Run? Fight? No, don’t be stupid. You won’t be able to outrun whoever it is. He’s clearly much larger than you and probably faster.

Walk, he hisses, shoving the gun into my back. I stumble forward, glancing around for help but no one seems to notice. Come on, we’re outside a school someone has to notice, don’t they? No one even glances at us as we head towards a black van. Of course it’s a shady black van. My heart pounds against my chest as my steps slow.

Don’t do something stupid, he warns and I gulp. His grip is bruising at this point and when he shoves me forward again I stumble all the way to the van. The back doors open and I’m thrown inside. I grimace, waiting for the pain of hitting the floor but it’s soft. Hmm, a mattress? Weird.

The doors slam shut and the engine roars, tires squealing. Complete darkness surrounds me. What will they do to me? Gosh, why did I go with them? How can I be so stupid? Don’t they say you’re never supposed to let them bring you to a second location?

Now, sweetheart, that same voice begins and a single light bulb flips on. I’m blinded by the light for just a moment, then my eyes take in the three guys before me.

The first one, the leader it seems, has red hair and red eyes. The second has orange hair with red eyes. The last one though… It’s Derek, that guy I met a couple of months ago right before summer break.

    The cop.

His eyes are also red, just as hard and cold as the others as they study me but somehow they seem kinder. Some of the worry squeezing my heart eases and, for some reason, I know I can trust him.

Pick whoever you want of us, the leader commands. What does he mean? Want for what?

I swallow hard but go with my gut feeling. My instincts have never failed me before.

Him, I whisper, pointing at the man in question. He doesn’t react but the red-haired chuckles and nods for him to get me.

Seems you’ve gotten your first girl, Didre, he smirks and Derek- or maybe Didre- copies it but somehow his doesn’t seem real.

Of course she chose me over your ugly asses, he retorts and sinks down in front of me, eyes roaming over my face, You’re cute.

I blush to which he laughs and then soothes some hair away from my face.

Give me a kiss, he orders but something in his eyes tells me we have to do this but he doesn’t want to.

A second pass, then another, and finally I lean forward. Tipping my head up, I gently press my lips to his. He hums, hand coming up to gently cup the back of my head as his lips force mine to move. Gosh, he smells amazing and his touch is so gentle. Pulling back, he grins and pecks my forehead.

Good girl, he praises and then gently scoops me up just as the van comes to a stop. I gasp, fisting his shirt, but he doesn’t seem bothered at all by my weight.

Without another word to the red-haired one, he carries me out of the van. I relax slightly as the van drives off and we’re left in alone front of a cute wooden cabin in the middle of the woods. His form remains tensed though as he carries me inside, then shuts the door firmly and locks it.

Gently, he places me on the bed and wraps a blanket around me. His eyes scan over me as he kneels before me so he’s at my level. He takes a deep breath.

Are you injured, Haile? he asks in a soothing tone.

Some bruises, I think, I whisper and he nods slightly.

I’m undercover, he admits. I relax, tucking the blanket tighter around me. You’ll be safe with me and I won’t harm you or anything but until my mission ends you’ll have to play along, okay? This gang is supposed to be taken down soon, that will be the best time to get you out of here as well and make sure you’re safe.

Okay, I agree, Will we be staying here?

He gives me a gentle smile.

Yes, usually the one that gets the girl is off from work for an entire week so we’ll be here until then at least. Just in case someone breaks in to check up on us we’ll have to sleep in this bed together but I won’t do anything, he promises and I nod.

I believe you, I confirm, my instincts telling me I can trust him completely.

    Thank you, he exhales relieved.

    * * *

I watch as Derek cooks, we haven’t said much since we got here.

Do you eat lasagna? he asks suddenly, breaking the silence.

I love it, I assure him, Is there something I can help with?

You can make some salad if you’d like? he suggests, coming over with a cutting board and knife. He settles it in front of me on the kitchen table and then grabs some salad, tomato, and cucumber.

Sounds good, I say and start cutting it up.

How have you been since we met in June? he asks.

Well, I’ve been relaxing and regretting not asking for your number, I admit and he glances surprised over his shoulder, then grins.

You too? I tried to find you but didn’t know your last name or really anything identifying so I came up with nothing, he explains, his tense shoulders relaxing.

You’re a cop and couldn’t find me? I question and he smiles sheepishly.

I felt it would be a bit stalkerish if I tried using the police resources to find you.

I would expect nothing less, I chuckle. He places the lasagna in the oven and then sits down opposite me.

Alright, I’ll do better next time, he muses and then smiles gently, What’s your full name though? Mine is Derek Wilson.

Haile Reed, I grin, How old are you?

    Twenty-three, he shrugs, you?

I turn nineteen tomorrow, I admit and his eyes widen slightly, then he grimaces.

    Worst birthday celebration ever.

Could have been worse, I shrug and he quirks a brow.

Being kidnapped and held captive isn’t the worst there is?

Well, not when there’s a certain undercover cop keeping you as safe as possible, I point out and his face softens even more as he smiles.

I guess you’re right about that. What do you usually do on your birthday?

Eat dinner with my parents and grandparents, I shrug, They give me some presents and then we play board games until it’s time to go to bed.

Sounds nice. Are you close to them?

Yes, but mostly to my grandmother, I smile, She lives in a little house next to ours so they spend a lot of time with us. Grandma is always there when you need to talk.

    Your mom’s or dad’s parents?

Mom’s. How about you? Are you close to your family?

Well, I’m adopted so I don’t have any biological family as far as I know. Xander and Lucy are great though. They adopted me when I was sixteen so we have more of a friendship, he explains, checking the food when the timer beeps.

    Any brothers or sisters?

Kind of. Isaac and Jason were adopted around the same time as me but their wives Miranda and Fiona are like my sister. Then we have Xander’s younger brother Dash and his wife Summer who also lives with us. We enjoy spending time together since it gives us a sense of family we haven’t had before, he explains, Do you have any siblings? He places the plates and lasagna on the table, settling down opposite me again. Dig in, he ushers.

No siblings, just me, I answer while plating some food.

    * * *

The next day, I’m seated on the kitchen counter next to Derek as he makes us breakfast.

Can you tell me anything about this gang? I ask and he nods, giving me a slight smile.

The leader is Francis Quinn, the redhead. He is power-hungry and calculating but can seem charming when he wishes to, he begins, This gang is called ‘the Quinn Family’ and specializes in trading slaves as well as drugs and guns. Every once in a while Francis finds a woman that he for some unknown reason doesn’t sell and instead gives her to one of his closest men. This was the first time I was allowed in on one of these.

So they wouldn’t have sold me?

No, but from what I’ve heard it’s just as awful, he tells me, meeting my eyes for a moment before he looks back at the
