    Amy’s Rainy Night

    Amy, a recently divorced mother of two, was driving home late at night. It was raining and cold. Her car started to pull to the right, as it had been doing for a couple of months, and she knew there was a problem. A loud flip-flop , flip-flop noise worsened until the car would not go any farther.

    With no umbrella, Amy got out to inspect the damage. Her right front tire was completely flat. She knew earlier that the tire needed replacing and feared if she did not get it fixed, there could very well be an accident.

    She planned on fixing it, but between her divorce, carting the kids back and forth from their activities, the stress of her custody battle, and struggling to pay the bills, she didn’t have the time (or plan the time) to take care of the tire. Now, having a flat tire while out in the rain put her over the edge.

    Amy sat down beside her car and slowly and quietly broke down in tears. How could this happen? she asked herself. At thirty-six years old, successful, and starting a new chapter in her life, Amy could not figure out why life was throwing her so many curveballs.

    As a mom, successful business partner, member of the PTA, soccer coach assistant, and community organizer, Amy thought she was doing the right things and always contributing to her family and community.

    It was a harsh but eye-opening reality when she sat down, looked in the mirror, and realized she could not be everything to everyone and hold it together. Life and consequences finally caught up with her and she knew she had to make changes. She had finally had enough. It’s the old adage of I’m sick and tired of being sick and tired.

    Fortunately, she had enough self-awareness that, after hitting rock bottom, she knew she was not living the life she had hoped for. She realized in order to reap the benefits of success, you have to create them, not just expect them to automatically happen or appear because of a job position, being married, or even being
