Elusive Peace in Modern Times
()
About this ebook
The ancient Greeks said, "The unexamined life is not worth living." In modern times, we continue to search for meaning and peace. Technology overwhelms us with anxiety and a fear of missing out. We pollute our planet and kill our animals. Our smart phones, televisions, and computers consume our time, keeping us from recharging and examining our lives. We are bombarded by so much information but less knowledge. Our quiet time is lost. We pray less. Truth becomes more elusive as corruption and greed overwhelm our institutions of justice, medicine, law, and politics. Goodness and common sense become lost in the madness. These poems reflect my thoughts on modern times. There is still hope if we look within for the truth.

The Virus
Bringing on an aura of fear
Unseen sickness and death draw near
Not knowing who has yet been infected
Adds anxiety to the unprotected
Life as we know it is shut down
Live sports and shows cannot be found
Restaurants and clubs are dark
As we listen to news so stark
Politicians make empty speeches to the masses
Yet their incompetence and lies make them look like asses
Scientists and physicians seek to reassure
Providing knowledge so the stricken can endure
The church provides the only true balm
Encouraging the faithful to remain calm
The believer knows that there is One whose last breath
Forever saved us all from sickness and death
A
Birthday
Another year of living
Another chance for giving
A milestone we take for granted
Unless our good health is supplanted
We long to live for many years
With loyal friends to share our fears
Some use their time to acquire great wealth and adulation
The wise seek contentment with humility and moderation
On this day, some need to be lifted with admiration
Others give quiet thanks for one more year of duration
Some attention and love is all we desire
To be remembered by those whom we admire
So on your date of birth
Give praise to God on earth
With his grace, you may be blessed with longevity
Much better than a shallow life of brevity
Conflict
That harshness which disrupts inner peace
Causing joy and harmony to cease
Inherent in the human condition
Creating bad feelings and division
Ignited by ignorance and beer
Toward races and cultures we fear
Sometimes coming between lovers
As well as strangers and brothers
Escalating to fighting and war
Causing men
