    Introduction

I have six watches—a dressy watch, a semidressy watch, a couple of casual watches, and even a watch to wear when I work in the yard or go swimming. Our lives revolve around time. In the corporate world, the saying Time is money is so true that we have taken the human aspect out of everything possible just to save time. I think Christians struggle with the issue of time because we know in our hearts where we need to spend our time, but the world screams out for more of our time.

I want to share my journey with you of how God taught me about time and how it is all His no matter what we say or do. God’s timing is perfect. It is not a second too late or too early. My journey with Christ is not over by any means because every day I learn that I have so much more to discover about my Heavenly Father.

The Bible dictionary that I use defines time as chronological sequence of life and its significance in biblical teaching. God is Lord of time, sovereignly present in all the events of time.

Be very careful, then, how you live, not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.

    Background

I grew up in a small town in rural Mississippi. My hometown was so small that if you ran a stop sign, your mother would get at least two phone calls reporting your wrongdoing before you had time to make it home. We actually lived about ten miles outside of town in the middle of nowhere. We call this out in the country in Mississippi. I learned to ride my bike and drive on a gravel road that led to our house. I have an older sister and a younger sister. My one brother probably did not stand much of a chance with three sisters. You could say my mother pretty much had her hands full. My mother was the glue that held our family together. My father’s presence was a scarce commodity at home, and they divorced after twenty years of marriage. I was fourteen and at that time and I thought I was okay with the divorce. As I grew older, I began to realize my parent’s divorce had a very profound effect on my life. We will discuss that effect in a future chapter.

I was brought up in a Christian home where no excuse was acceptable for not going to church on Sunday. My mother taught us that if you were not bleeding or dead, then you went to church. I can recall at least two Sundays that we did not make it to church because of my own bleeding.

On one particular morning (there is some debate in my family on what day this occurred), I was the first one ready so I decided to go outside and play. We always had cane fishing poles lying about because of the pond behind our house. I picked up one of the poles and was pretending to be fishing. As I was throwing out my line, somehow, someway, the hook swung back and lodged securely in the right side of my nose. I started screaming and my mother came running. Once she got over the shock of what had happened, she cut the line and put me
