About this ebook

As a police officer, you are in a brotherhood much like the marines or a special operations-type soldier. You would do anything for your brother, even die for them. In the years 2016 and 2017, there were a lot of rookie cops getting killed in the line of duty. This hurts you to the core. One night I was crying out to the Lord and asked him, "Lord, what can I do to help? My brothers and sisters are being killed every day." I was beside myself with grief, and I believe I heard God speak to me in a still, small voice, "Give them your knowledge. Give them your years of experience." So I wrote a book. During this time, survival shows were all the rage. So the title Survival Handbook for Rookies (Rookie Cops) was born. I've held onto it, waiting for the Lord to say when, and I believe he is saying, "The time is now!" If this book helps one person, it will have been all worth it.

    About the Author

    Dedications

What better sacrifice is there than to lay down one's life for another? That is the call for those in law enforcement. This book is dedicated to all the men, women, and families of those who paid the ultimate price to protect and serve. To those who still serve in these trying times, don't give up, fight the good fight, hold your head up, and be proud to be a LEO (law enforcement officer).

I also dedicate this book to my dear friend who is no longer with us, my fishing buddy, Kim Sorenson. He took me under his wing and showed me that not everyone is the same. This man was the CEO of a successful company and treated me as an equal—more than an equal, a close friend. Thank you, Kim.

    Acknowledgments

There are so many people to thank who have helped mold my life. First, I want to thank my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, for making the ultimate sacrifice for me. I then want to thank my mom and dad, Ty and Carol Cottingham, for making sure that Jesus was in my life. My mom and dad made sure that from a very young age that I was in church every Sunday unless I was sick. My dad would not take no for an answer, and my mom carried on the same way if my dad was gone. You see, my dad was in the navy, and he would be gone oftentimes six months out of a year. My mom would look up at me (she was small in stature), point her finger at me, and give me what for. I would try not to grin because that would just make her madder, but she was so darn cute acting all tough. My mom and dad also made sure I got good grades in school and always did my best in everything I did.

I want to thank my pastor, Daren Carstens, who is both a friend and mentor to me. Pastor D had a mentor group that met in our church, and he challenged us to start businesses, write books, etc.

I want to thank my wife, Tina, who has such great faith and has helped me grow mine. She is a rock, and I love her dearly. She helped me get through some rough spots in my career and made me a better officer.

I want to thank the Alton Police Department for the twenty-one great years and awesome training they provided me. I especially want to thank Chris Sullivan Sr., who was a big part of my career. Chris gave me a lot of guidance during my carrier as a police
