    About the Author

    Alpha: (Beginnings)

It is the beginning of a new school year. Teachers’ calendars are empty. Grade books are void. Kleenex boxes are full. Behavior documentation sheets are bare of incidents. All the supplies are in plenty. It is the beginning.

Beginnings are wonderful! The page is blank, and there are endless possibilities with what we can write or draw or imagine. As we stop and ponder a new school year, think of the lives we touch as a canvas. Each day, we get out the paint and a brush and ever so carefully add a little more to the picture of their lives. We have opportunities to splash color and dimension to what may otherwise be a dull vision. Let’s take that challenge and begin painting something beautiful each day!

Let’s go back in time—all the way back to the beginning of time. Jesus was there. In fact, the Bible says in John 1:1–5 (NIV),

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through Him all things were made; without Him nothing was made that has been made. In Him was life, and that life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.

As we think of our students, let’s remember that they were made through Him. They were made by Him. He has a purpose for each one of us and each one of them. Be encouraged right now, about the one who is causing you to shake your head already and wonder, How in the world am I going to teach this one? God has given that child life and breath. He has placed you and that child together at this point in both of your lives for a specific reason. You will make a difference. If Jesus is in us, we have life in us, and the life that is in us is the Light of the World. We shine His light, but most people don’t understand it. A lot of our students come from dark places—places we may know nothing about. We have the privilege of being a light for them.

We have within us a strength and endurance that others don’t have. We don’t walk in our own strength; it is a supernatural strength that comes only from Jesus Christ.

Let’s begin this year strong. Let’s begin this year ready. We are a city set on a hill. Be encouraged that He goes with us and we face nothing alone! What incredible news for the start of a new school year!

But I’ve Done Everything I Can Do

Now it came about that while the multitude were pressing around Him and listening to the word of God, He was standing by the lake of Gennesaret; and
