My mother, Ana Mae; her three friends Mary Lou, Maddy Fae, Charlie; my three younger brothers, Billy, Elmer, John; and I, Betsy, were all full of joy. I never imagined us being so happy to see one of Master’s In -House Negroes come in our shed’s door. But he was here to deliver our freedom papers. The answer to our prayer.

We all waited with excitement for Master’s In-House Negro to hand us our freedom papers.

Anxiously, my mother asked, Are you here to give us our freedom papers?

My mother’s three friends, my three brothers, and I all looked down at his hands.

He immediately replied, "No, I’m here to let you all
