About this ebook
Miracle from Tobacco Road is a true story of the life and times of Jesse Davis. He was born in North Carolina and lived his life in the south. His is a story of a man who overcame many difficulties and hardships in his life through the miracles and grace of God, whether or not he knew it at the time. It is a story of salvation and redemption. It is an interesting book with many stories that will keep you wanting to find out what happens next.
This book is written like Jesse talks, in a poor, rural, southern conversational style, sometimes spoken in the present as if each moment in his life was now. Jesse talks very openly about his life, relationships, alcohol and drug use, and the difficulties and tragedies that he overcame. It is about the miracles that spared his life on several occasions, to the point that Jesse knew without a doubt that Jesus Christ was following him and protecting him, never abandoned him, and kept leading him to God.

I was born in North Carolina in 1958, six minutes behind my twin sister. We were abandoned at twelve or fourteen months old, and our grandmother on our father’s side took us by herself and raised us until we were thirteen years old. Our biological mother then took us to Tennessee. I started working at fourteen; I quit school and started driving a truck for a living after getting in all kinds of trouble. I have no children of my own, but I did raise two boys from a previous marriage. I managed to get my high school diploma and later had a year of Bible school and a year of TV and radio production. I have lived in Florida, California, and Nevada. I’ve been close to death a few times and managed to start my own business a couple of times. I now live by faith.

Introduction
This is the story of my life as long as I can remember. I feel that the Holy Spirit has encouraged me to write this story to prove that the Holy Spirit has been with me ever since I can remember. Not that I’m anything special, for the Holy Spirit can be with us all if we would only allow him to. I can remember as far back as four years old, and have seen how the Lord has been with me ever since.
My life has been full of miracles, when my Savior has saved my life on many occasions. It hasn’t been an easy life for me but at the same time, it has been a great joy. I am not looking for riches or sympathy, but just hoping to show how God can be with you if you trust in him and believe IN HIS SON, JESUS CHRIST. I dedicate this book to my Savior.
Chapter 1
I remember my sister and me sitting in our grandmother’s lap with our heads buried in her chest. We were crying uncontrollably with great fear of the people in the room. These were friends of our grandmother, who from now on, I will call mama. For to us, she was our mother. We would sit in her lap until she would make them leave. I still remember looking up at my sister and seeing the tears rolling down her face. We were in harmony with the tears. As I look back, I still do not know where the fear came from. Something must have taken place before our grandmother had us in her custody. We were told by her that our mother had left us with her at about 14 months old. According to her we were anemic to the point that we were eating the dung from our own diapers. My sister had a bad sore on her foot that caused it to nearly rotted off, were someone had stuck her to a hot stove. Whatever it was that traumatized us was followed up by nightmares for me, until I was 18 years of age. Nightmares, to the point I would get up at night and go outside running and screaming and mama would have to come after me. We never had much company because my sister and I were scared of everyone.
We lived in an old wooden house by Highway 210 in North Carolina. I remember it was a cold house and my mama would hang blankets to separate the rooms to keep the house warm. Sometimes I can see the blankets in my mind and remember how I thought they were demons with all the different colors and the designs. So much fear for such a little person.
My mama had a younger son by her second marriage that was old enough to drive, who lived with us some. He was in and out most of the time, we called him uncle. He was a good uncle for the most part. Most of my days were spent wandering outside in the yard with a mayonnaise sandwich in my hand and throwing dirt clods with the other one, while my sister played hopscotch.
Chapter 2
Moving day, my mama had some insurance money from her husband dying that was enough to buy her a small house. It was a small four room house with a small screened in back porch. Her husband’s brother-in-law lived approximately one mile from us and brought his truck to help us move. I remember it being a cold day and trying to stay out of the way. I was excited, for someone had left a small bicycle with training wheels on it. It was my first bicycle and my sister and I helped each other learn how to ride. The new house didn’t have a bathroom or running water, it had an outside hand pump. I can remember at times if the electric bill got over six dollars, it would upset my mama.
The house was surrounded with woods so there we were all three of us enjoying our new house. Someone gave my mother a old Emerald black-and-white TV. It was a two-bedroom home, my sister and I, and my grandmother shared one bedroom and the other one was for my uncle whenever he was there. We had about six army blankets that we slept under each night. I can remember it being cold and our mama would get up every morning and build a fire in her old wood stove, and would lay our clothes out by the stove, that way we could get up and run to the stove to put our clothes on while we were getting dressed. She would start fixing breakfast. She never let us start a day without a hot breakfasts. Somehow I had caught the flu or some type of illness and was very sick. She spent a lot of time in the kitchen area, so she moved a small cot for me to lay on while I was sick.
The TV was also in the kitchen where we could watch Capt. Kangaroo while we were eating our breakfast. I think I laid there on that cot for at least two weeks. I can remember Capt. Kangaroo, not being on TV and a horse-drawn carriage with a flag draped coffin across it being on the TV. I remember asking my mama what was going on and she told me that our president had been killed and that was his funeral. I remember seeing the little boy saluting as the carriage went by and my mama told me that was his son. I remember being really sad and I think I also cried even though I didn’t understand.
My mama received a letter in the mail from my father saying that we had a couple of packages at the train station. My sister and I got really excited and could hardly wait
