    Obesity: The Universal Health Crisis

Obesity contributes to practically every disease associated with aging and is a major threat to longevity and health. Due to excess ingestion of unhealthy sugars and fats, many Americans carry too much abdominal fat. While millions of people are dying of hunger, Americans are dying from over eating. This is a difficult problem and a difficult condition to overcome. Controlling obesity depends on making nutritional and lifestyle changes. Losing weight and keeping it off requires a permanent holistic lifestyle. Beware of all the food diets claims that you can lose a pound a day while eating all the foods you like. That is the reason most people are overweight in the first place. If one is expected to have holistic health, one must be on an holistic health program advocated in this book.

Obesity is now considered a national epidemic, one that adds billions of dollars to our country’s annual medical bills and contributes to loss of health and life for hundreds of thousands of Americans every year. In July 2011, the Life Extension Foundation said about 65 percent of Americans are now overweight or obese. This excess weight costs our nation an estimated ninety-three billion in annual medical bills. A study by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development predicted that by the year 2020, nearly 75 percent of the American population will be overweight or obese. Now in 2019–2020, these predictions are coming true. The New England Journal of Medicine says 72 percent of people are overweight or obese.

The author has done his own research, watching people going in and out of the food markets with their shopping cart full of unhealthy fat foods. Most of the time, I can count eight out of ten (80 percent) people who are very overweight or just outright obese with large protruding bellies.

The Dangers of Excessive Abdominal Fat

There are three kinds of fat that accumulate in your belly or abdomen. Stored under the skin, it is referred to as subcutaneous fat. Another fat that accumulates inside the abdominal region (stomach, liver, and other abdominal organs) is referred to as visceral fat. Lastly, the other fat deposited deep in the abdomen—the space behind the internal organs and the tissue called the peritoneum—that lines the entire abdominal cavity is called retroperitoneal fat.

Several studies suggest that excessive visceral fat is the most important contributor to health risk because it is the fats that surrounds the internal organs of our abdomen. Visceral fat promotes systematic inflammation, which accelerates aging and the risk of type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, atherosclerosis, and cardiovascular disease.

Typical Americans ingest too many sugars, starches, and bad fats, resulting to abdominal fat. Ingestion of simple sugars and the wrong carbohydrates speeds up the aging process. Ingestion of certain dietary fat, including trans fats and saturated fat, all contribute to systemic inflammation, which leads to most health problems.

    Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD)

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease has rapidly become the most common cause of chronic liver disease in the USA and industrialized nations. The disease is a direct consequence of our high saturated fat, high-sugar carbohydrate diets, and our sedentary lifestyles. NAFLD is a serious consequence of insulin resistance and can lead to steatohepatitis, which is a precursor of liver cirrhosis and even liver cancer (see chapter 7 in the detox section).

This disease is caused by being overweight or obese and is also associated with at least fourteen types of cancer: (1) thyroid, (2) gallbladder, (3) stomach, (4) liver, (5) pancreatic, (6) kidney, (7) ovarian, (8) uterine, (9) colon or rectum, (10) breast in postmenopausal women, (11) myeloma in the blood cells, (12) meningioma in the brain and spinal cord, (13) esophageal, and (14) prostate.

    Body Mass Index

It is very important to know your body mass index (BMI) before you start on a holistic health program. Find your BMI before you start and check your success rate during your program.

The surgeon general report in 2011 states that if your BMI is over 30, you have a 50–100 percent higher risk of dying from all causes compared to someone of your age and gender whose BMI is 20 to 25. Because of unhealthy eating habits and lack of physical activity, the risk of dying from heart and blood vessel disease is much greater. Simply being overweight is definitely a burden to the heart and cardiovascular system.

The American Cancer Society estimate that as many as ninety thousand deaths could be prevented every year in the United States if everyone maintained a BMI of 25 or less throughout life. Think about it!

How to find you body mass index:

    BMI—weight in pounds

    (height in inches) 2 x 703

For those who do not want to do the math, if you have internet access, you can find BMI calculators on several web sites (e.g., www.bmicalcular.net).

    BMI

    Below 18.5 underweight

    18.5 to 24.9 normal

    25.0 to 29.9 overweight

    30.0 to 39.0 obese

    Over 40.0 extremely obese

    Don’t Overlook Your Thyroid

When was the last time you went to the doctor and had your thyroid checked? When was the last time you had thyroid blood testing? A healthy thyroid gland not only acts as the body’s thermostat, but it’s one of the major regulators of metabolism, including fat burning for energy. Optimal thyroid function can help improve energy levels, motivation, metabolism, healthy weight management, and concentration.

It is very important to find out your biomarkers with comprehensive weight loss panels and thyroid panels for male and female with Life Extension. To order, call 1-800-208-3444 toll free or visit LifeExtension.com/Lab Services. For healthy thyroid function, the author recommends triple-action thyroid formula. Call 1-800-544-4440 or visit www.lifeextension.com.

Caution, if you have a thyroid condition or are taking antithyroid medications, do not use supplements without first consulting your healthcare practitioner.

Foods to Avoid That Promote Weight Gain and Promote Bad Health

There are two kinds of carbohydrates, simple carbohydrates and complex carbohydrates. Simple carbohydrates are bad carbohydrates. Complex carbohydrates are digested more slowly than simple carbohydrates and provided a better, steady source of energy. They do not give the sudden burst of energy called the sugar rush. Simple carbohydrates are also very high in calories with the highest on the glycemic index that cause the high sugar rush. This surge floods the body with excess glucose. Eating foods that provoke a rapid rise in blood glucose causes the beta cells in the pancreas to release a surge of insulin so that the glucose can be absorbed into all the cells that need it, which, over a period of time, become resistant to the insulin, causing type 2 diabetes.

Insulin is the ultimate cause of fatness and obesity. The bad carbohydrates cause the insulin to surge, and the excess glucose gets converted to fat. Dietary fat does not raise blood insulin, however, fat is higher in calories per gram of fat compared to carbohydrate or protein. Fat is higher in calories than any other source. There are nine calories per gram of fat, compared to only four grams of carbohydrate or protein.

Anyone who is overweight, restricting your daily calorie intake of fat and simple carbohydrates will reduce your total daily calorie intake and help the reader of this book to lose weight. Always read nutrition facts and calories from fat and carbohydrates. Although eating a diet that is low in carbs and fat is very important to any weight loss program, however, it is still important that not only you restrict your daily calorie intake, you must also increase your level of physical activity (see chapter 9). Although food is your fuel, it is important to consume less and burn more calories to successfully lose weight. Fat loss is essential to true weight loss. Remember, the goal is to lose fat pounds, not muscle pounds, which is why it is very important to exercise.

Foods to avoid that promote weight gain that are high sugar, high sodium, high fat, high bad carbohydrates, and calories, which are harmful to your health:

    high-fructose foods

    potato chips or all chips

    chocolate bars or cookies

    cake and candies

    ice cream

    all fried foods

    refined bread

    all processed foods

    margarine

    all cheeses

    butter and dairy products

    doughnuts

    all high-fructose drinks

    all barbecued foods

The author is fully aware that it is almost impossible to avoid all the foods mentioned in the list above, however, please do the best you can to reduce your weight and promote good health. Try to avoid all foods with saturated fats, hydrogenated oil or trans-fatty acids, and others not on this list. Always read labels and please avoid fast foods. Sad to say, the foods we should avoid are the foods we all crave the most (me too). The junk food industry wants to keep us all junked up at the expense of our health for financial gains.
