Dedication
To my father, Chief Enyinnaya Kanu, who passed away in 2001 just before I became a lawyer he always wanted me to become. He was my best friend at the time, and I did everything to make him proud of me. We were very close, and I still cherish all the good times we spent together as father and son.
Acknowledgements
I deeply acknowledge the immense contributions my family, colleagues, and friends have made by way of support and encouragement for this work to become a reality. Most sincerely, I thank my lovely and beautiful wife, Chinwe Christina, for her support and encouragement without which this book will have been impossible. Then my wonderful children Kelechi Chiedozie, Michelle Ifeyinwa, and Jesse Iheanyichukwu. Then my friend and public relations specialist, Lawrence Okezie Odoemelem, who helped with transcribing this work and pressured me into not giving up on the project. I thank Pastor Timothy Olorunfemi for his unflinching support and encouragement. Pastor Tim insisted that if I will celebrate my sixtieth birthday, it has to go with the book launch and that is what pushed me to the finish line. I will not forget to mention my sister Joy in the US for her support and thoughts into this book. Of course, many thanks to my sister Ngozi in Nigeria who is always encouraging me to get this work done. There is no way I could have gotten to where I am today without her prayers, encouragement, support, and sheer show of strength, love, and faith. I acknowledge the tireless efforts of my staff as they took on more work to allow me the time to finish this work. Special thanks to my able associate Sally Nyemba, Esq. who helped me tremendously to pull this work through with assistance of another associate Sukhbir Dhami, Esq. and all our support staff. I truly thank you all.
Review/Commentary
The Immigrants’ Manual for Success in America: Unlocking the Secrets to the Visa Process, Entering the US, Staying in the US, and Excelling in the US written by Solomon O. Kanu Esq.
There is a popular saying that ignorance is bliss
meaning if you do not know about something, you do not worry about it.
But when it comes to immigration issues, "ignorance is not bliss! In fact, ignorance can be deadly or very costly at best. The Bible puts it succinctly in the book of Hosea 4:6 that
my people perish (or are destroyed) for lack of knowledge. Even though the Bible talks of knowledge with respect to God, the story of many immigrants in the United States—legal and illegal—is similar: they perish or are destroyed due to lack of knowledge about the immigration laws and how best to go about legalizing their stay and achieve the
American dream."
Imagine the number of people who die daily along the US-Mexican border while trying to smuggle
their way to the US, the number of immigrants who are deported daily, the number of immigrants living in the shadows
and in ever-present fear of being caught or deported or those who are doing menial and illegal jobs far beneath their qualifications and experience just to survive and those who have not been able to travel out of the country to visit their loved ones because of lack of papers.
The majority of immigrants who eventually legalize their stay pass through needless, tortuous, arduous, and costly process which may have been avoided if only they knew what to do—if only they had read this book! This book explains in a layman’s language
the secret, the bolts, and the knots of the visa process, entering, staying, and excelling in the United States. It is divided into three parts: coming to America, staying in America, and excelling in America.
The first part covers a wide range of issues the intending immigrant must know before leaving his country for the United States, including the visa process, the intending immigrant syndrome,
maintaining eye contact during the visa interview, clearing the immigration officials at the port of entry, how to avoid being denied entry because having a valid US visa does not guarantee entry into the United States, and how to get to your destination after passing through immigration.
The second part deals with how to maintain your stay in America and covers such issues as avoiding out of status,
change of status, adjusting your status, and the
