Call Athens High School
It was 3:30 p.m. on a Friday afternoon in January of 1977 when the message came. I was employed as an instructor and athletic coach at Samford University. I was on salary and receiving free tuition for a master’s degree. My wife, Jackie, had a very nice position in the financial aides office, and we were provided rent-free housing in a beautiful new apartment complex where no one else had ever lived.
My office was located on the fourth floor of the gymnasium. On this particular day, it was my responsibility to lock and secure the facility. I followed the regular schedule starting with the basement doors and worked my way up to the fourth floor. With the building secured, I went to my office to get my jacket and hat before leaving for the day.
When I entered my office, I felt a strong presence of the Holy Spirit. I knew I was about to receive another message from the Lord. I did not hear a voice, but I received the message, Call Athens High School and tell them you will be available.
I sat down at my desk and said to God, Lord, exactly what is it that you want me to do?
I did not hear a voice, but the message was clear, Pick up the phone and call Athens High School and tell them you are available.
I said to the Lord, Which Athens High School?
I grew up in the state of Tennessee and was familiar with Athens, Tennessee. I had lived and worked in Georgia, not far from Athens, Georgia. I was also familiar with Athens, Alabama, since I was familiar with traveling north and south on US Highway 31 through Athens, Alabama.
The answer came quickly. I did not hear a voice but the message was plain, Athens, Alabama.
Still sitting at my desk, I said to God, Let me make sure I know exactly what I am supposed to do. You want me to phone Athens High School in Athens, Alabama, and tell them I will be available. When, Lord, will I be available? I am obligated by agreement to remain on staff here through August 16, 1977.
The return message was, "Yes, you will be available
